What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Program 1

Advocacy program includes nonpartisan research on a variety of issues impacting the environment and quality of life in the Florida Keys. The Last Stand board was very active during FY 2019, speaking at many Key West City and Monroe County meetings. Topics where the organization provided information to elected officials included protection for coral reefs, Everglades restoration, affordable housing, sustainability best practices, growth management and safe hurricane evacuation. Significant expenditures were made for administrative appeal of comprehensive plan amendments by the cities of Key West, Marathon and Islamorada that impact safe hurricane evacuation and land abandonment impacting public access to waterfront on Stock Island.

A member forum was held to gather comments that were submitted regarding options for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary management plan update. Education events included a two virtual panel discussions by proponents and opponents of three referenda questions for Key West voters on the November general election ballot. Annual meeting program featured a presentation by a representative of the National Weather Service on rapid intensification of hurricanes. An additional event educated members and guests attending about multi-species fish spawning areas and research on these locations that are important for sustaining the fishery in the Florida Keys.
