Advocacy program includes nonpartisan research on a variety of issues impacting the environment and quality of life in the Florida Keys. The Last Stand board continued to speak at many Key West City and Monroe County meetings. Topics where the organization provided information to elected officials included promoting water quality, habitat protection for wildlife and coral reefs, advocating for affordable housing solutions that increase supply near employment centers; continued to support safer hurricane evacuation by limiting growth in Monroe County; and promoting more sustainable practices for Lobster Mini-Season to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission and county stakeholders. After research, endorsed a Key West referendum to allow up to a 99 year lease to the Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden. This referendum was approved. Because the overwhelming majority of these efforts were by volunteer board members, the financial cost to the organization is minimal.
