What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Wild Bird Rehabilitation
The Rehabilitation program rescues and rehabilitates injured wild native and migratory birds of the Florida Keys. The Center is equipped with a full service hospital that includes diagnostic, surgical and rehabilitative services. The main goal is to rehabilitate and return to the wild as many of the injured birds as is possible.
Wild Bird Sanctuary
The Center provides a 7 acre mangrove habitat designated as the wild bird sanctuary where the permanently injured birds go to live out their natural lives and serve as ambassadors for all wild bird species.
Education and Outreach
The goal of the Education and Outreach program is to teach the general public with a particular emphasis on school children to appreciate nature and to learn how to take actions to conserve the environment and protect the native and migratory wild birds of their region.
Intership Program
The Florida Keys Wild Bird Center accepts an average of 5 interns from around the world to live and work at our facility. We include housing and provide a stipend. Our internships last around 6 months and provide interns with the ability to learn about wildlife rehabilitation, develop wildlife medical skills, and animal husbandry.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
1.0 Global Ends Statement: The Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center exists to keep
the birds flying.
Accordingly,
1.1 Native and migratory wild birds of the Florida Keys have access to a highly effective
hospital and rehabilitation service.
1.2 Birds that are permanent residents of the Center are stress free, safe, and content, and
serve as ambassadors of the Center’s work.
1.3 The general public is equipped to take action towards a healthy co-existence with all wild
bird species.
1.4 Children and youth are empowered to appreciate, protect, and conserve all wild bird
species.
1.5 The Center’s results are viewed as worth the costs by major funders and substantial
donors.
1.6 If resources (defined as cash and cash equivalents) become constrained, the health and
well-being of the birds takes precedence over Ends Policies 1.3 and 1.4.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Create an effective supportive environment for native wild birds in the Florida Keys. -- We treat about 1,000 native wild birds of about 100 different species in our avian hospital every year.
We have full time paid staff and we have interns who are provided housing and a stipend. The full time paid staff received what we call "At Your Elbow" training from board members and from other members of the community. Most commonly, this staff training is in matters of finance, but they also have access to expertise in social media and personnel management. The interns have a standardized curriculum that includes dealing with the public, business practices, and (most recently) personal health.
• Engage in strategic partnerships with other nonprofit, public and/or private sector organizations.
• Community building, training and/or organizing.
• Participate in networks or collective impact efforts to develop shared goals across multiple organizations.
• Raise awareness of mission and cause though marketing activities, social media, etc.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
