Mission

People with disabilities represent the largest minority group in the nation and the only group any one of us could join at any time.  This group crosses lines of ethnicity, gender, age and socioeconomic status.  Yet, Americans with disabilities have the highest rate of unemployment, the highest rate of poverty and the lowest level of education of any minority grouless than 3 percent of institutionalized giving is directed to programs serving people with disabilities. They are the forgotten minority.

The ChairScholars Foundation, Inc. is a Florida-based charity with 501c (3) status.  Our sole mission is to provide scholarships to low-income children with severe physical disabilities for college.  We have three programs for this purpose; the Florida Program, the National Program and the New York Metropolitan Area Program.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Florida Scholarship Program

The Florida Scholarship Program provides scholarships for full college tuition, or vocational training. Scholarships are available to middle school students attending public schools in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Sarasota and Volusia counties. Eligible students must have a serious physical disability, qualify for the free and reduced lunch program, and have at least a “C” average.  Selected students are provided with a mentor until they graduate from high school.  These students also sign a “contract” pledging to stay drug-free and crime-free in order to keep their scholarship.

Population(s) Served

The National Scholarship Program is available to students from Maine to Oregon, Texas to Minnesota – and everywhere in between.  This program provides a maximum of $20,000 in tuition assistance over four years for students to achieve a bachelor’s degree. High school seniors and college freshmen with profound physical challenges, unmet financial need, at least a B average, and a track record of community service or social contribution are eligible to apply.

Population(s) Served

The New York Metropolitan Area Scholarship Program is available to high school seniors residing in the five burroughs of New York City, part of Long Island, and northern and central New Jersey. Candidates with at least a C+ average, and history of community service, or social contribution are eligible to apply. Candidates must provide proof of unmet financial need. This program currently provides a maximum of $20,000 in tuition assistance over four years for students to achieve a bachelor’s degree.
