What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

School-community program

GMP’s school-community program, which began in 2008, was developed based on the finding that lack of family support for schooling was linked to parents’ perceptions that schools are culturally inappropriate and that they threaten the transmission of traditional knowledge. GMP carries out various activities to improve school-community relationships, which in turn contribute to increased school enrollment. Activities include: grandmother-teacher workshops, booklets for children on cultural values for use in the classroom, integration of cultural education into classroom curricula, bringing grandmothers into classrooms to teach traditional values, and training with teachers.

Population(s) Served

Girls’ Holistic Development (GHD) began as a 3-year project carried out in Velingara, Senegal from 2008-2011, which aimed to build the capacity of communities to improve the health and well-being of girls using GMP’s grandmother-inclusive and intergenerational approach to change. Following success of the project, GMP continued to work with communities involved to expand GHD activities that target early/forced marriage, female genital mutilation, teen pregnancy, and girls' education.
