What we aim to solve
Hurt people hurt people. We are addressing the impact of violence, especially domestic and sexual violence, on the lives of the people in our community. Domestic and sexual violence create cyclical effects on victims, survivors and their families, friends, others in their extended families, and our communities. A child's development is adversely affected from exposure to family violence, especially in the home. They carry the trauma as a result of their experience into adult life. Without trauma-informed care through advocacy, programs and services for healing and empowerment, the cycle continues. Victims and survivors escaping abusive relationships, child survivors of domestic violence, rape victims, incest survivors--all need crisis intervention and opportunities to receive counseling and other supportive services. Safe spaces victims and survivors to heal and rebuild their lives. WCSC provides services that include a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter and transitional housing.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Transitional Housing Program
Our Transitional Housing Program provides secure leased housing and support services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking or dating violence and their children, for up to 12 months.
Sojourner House Shelter
Sojourner House provides a safe, nurturing environment to help women and their children escape abuse, begin to heal and rebuild their lives. Residents receive supportive services, including referrals, therapeutic counseling, life and parenting skills training and child care while they attend classes or work.
24-Hour Crisis Intervention
Trained volunteer advocates meet victims and survivors in crisis at police stations or emergency room to offer support without judgment and remain as long as they are needed. Advocates carry go-bags with toiletries, clothing and light snacks to every call. Advocates are on-call and available, 24/7/365.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Healthy communities are created through healthy relationships between individuals, families, in neighborhoods and businesses. Our goals are to see violence eradicated and support for survivors of violence fully funded and available, when and for as long as it is needed.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
WCSC is an extraordinary constellation of service, counseling and education. Key factors in our strategy: to meet victims and survivors where they are in their experience, so that they know crucial help is available, that they are believed and that a life free from violence is possible. We offer 24/7/365 crisis intervention, and maintain partnerships with law enforcement, local human services and other government agencies, and peer social and government agencies on the mainland and in other areas of the world, to ensure that lifesaving services are available when they are needed. Other strategies we use are outreach and focused collaborative campaigns to educate on and prevent domestic and sexual violence, and promote healthy relationships.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We hold volunteer victim advocacy training every 18 months, facilitated by WCSC staff, experts, thought leaders on related subjects and issues, and experienced advocates. We recruit and prepare community members for duty as advocates that are contacted for victims in crisis on our 24/7/365 crisis intervention hotline.
Our staff includes counselors for adults and child victims and survivors
Sojourner House and our transitional housing program are also staffed with case managers for individual assistance and referrals, and child care services for residents who are in school or employed.
