AMIGOS DE LOS ANIMALES INC
a voice for abused and abandoned animals
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
We seek to find homes for all domesticated animals, thereby reducing the stray population until there are no more.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Animal Control Officer / Cruelty Investigator Certification Course
ADLA has collaborated with the Puerto Rico Health Department's Division of State Animal Control (OECA) and with Career Development Institute of New Jersey to provide ACO/CI training and certification in Puerto Rico. Courses are conducted annually.
Shelter
ADLA operates a dog shelter located in Loiza, Puerto Rico, where we temporarily home approximately 55 to 75 dogs at one-time. The dogs are either adopted or shipped to sister, no-kill shelters in the United States. On Saturdays, ADLA organizes a volunteer-cleanup of the entire shelter.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
By acting as a voice for abused and abandoned animals in Puerto Rico, defending those who cannot speak for themselves, and uniting with other rescue organizations, we believe we will eradicate the over-population of companion animals and suffering of all animals on the island, resulting in a more humane Puerto Rico. Amigos de los Animales relies on the generous donations of people like you in order to achieve this goal.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
ADLA operates a dog shelter located in the Piñones area of Loiza—one of the poorest municipalities in Puerto Rico with a poverty rate of over 50%; and known as a famous dumping ground for unwanted pets. Since its incorporation in 2005, ADLA has rescued approximately 3,300 dogs, and the Shelter (on average) houses between 55 and 75 dogs at a time. ADLA adopts its rescues within the island, or ships dogs to adopters or recipient no-kill shelters on the mainland United States.
ADLA also promotes humane animal treatment within the community. We organize low-cost sterilization and vaccination events to promote education on humane animal treatment. Together with the Puerto Rico Health Department and Career Development Institute of New Jersey, we coordinate a six-day Animal Control Officer/Cruelty Investigator Course, which is attended by police officers and members of animal welfare organizations.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Amigos de los Animales (ADLA) operates a shelter in the Pinones Beach home of Adrienne Galler Lastra. We currently use local veterinarians to treat and sometimes board our animals including Drs. Juan Ellin, Monica Pagan, Jose A. Diaz Umpierre, and Carlos Mongil and as well as other area veterinarians. All of our Vets have been instrumental in the rehabilitation of hundreds of our rescued pets.
