What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Meals on Wheels in Contra Costa County provides meals to nutritionally at-risk homebound elders with no other viable means of receiving a nutritious daily meal. Seniors are the fastest- growing population in Contra Costa County and many of these seniors have challenges that prevent them from accessing ad/or preparing healthy food. Many seniors have limited means of transportation, one or more underlying health conditions, and no friends or family close by to depend on to help them with their nutritional needs.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our primary objective is to provide all nutritionally at-risk homebound elders in our County with nutritious daily meals through Meals on Wheels to help them maintain their health and independence. In doing this, our seniors are able remain living in the comfort and security of their own homes for as long as possible. We help bridge the health gap in the aging population by providing nutritious meals for seniors who may otherwise not have the resources to provide for themselves.

Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa, Inc. is a coalition of multiple agencies involved in providing Meals on Wheels Services to homebound elders in Contra Costa County. We subcontract through two other organizations: Meals on Wheels Diablo Region and West County Meals on Wheels to handle the intake process for our clients and coordinate meal deliveries. We are the largest funder of meals for seniors in Contra Costa County and provide the financial resources needed to close the gap between limited government funding and an ever-increasing need for services. It is our responsibility to find the necessary financial resources from the community to ensure that all qualifying homebound elders can be reached with Meals on Wheels in a timely manner to maintain their health and independence. We subsidize over 416,000 nutritious meals annually which are then delivered to frail, nutritionally at-risk homebound elders in the county.

We raise and spend more than $1.6 million per year in individual contributions and charitable grants to subsidize more than 416,000 annual meals delivered to homebound elders throughout our county annually; an average of 1,650 meals per day. Over our 30+ years, we have established a strong repertoire within the community as the only agency in our county raising funds to provide the meals delivered to homebound elders served by the countywide Meals on Wheels Program. We have registered dieticians on staff, ensuring that meals are nutritionally balanced and tailored to specific dietary needs as well as a strong team of staff and volunteers delivering meals and performing well checks on our seniors. We have a broad network of partners including Meals on Wheels Diablo Region, West County Meals on Wheels, and the Contra Costa County Public Health Senior Nutrition Program.

Since 1990, Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa has raised more than $17 million from the community and subsidized more that 5.3 million meals delivered to homebound elders countywide. We bridge the widening gap between an ever increasing number of frail homebound elders in need of Meals on Wheels in our county, and insufficient government funding for these critical services. In the future, we are looking to continue to expand our program by increasing our service area, creating new service routes, eliminating the wait list for all routes, and continue to grow in our support for the homebound seniors in our community.
