Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The Conservancy works to mitigate the loss of 22 species covered under the federal and state endangered species acts (the "Covered Species") from urban development in the 54,000-acre Natomas Basin of California.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
wildlife conservation
The purpose of the NBHCP is to promote biological conservation along with economic development and the continuation of agriculture within the Natomas Basin. The NBHCP establishes a multi-species conservation program to mitigate the expected loss of habitat values and incidental take of protected species that would result from urban development, operation of irrigation and drainage systems, and rice farming.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Effective mitigation for the loss of Covered Species caused by urbanization in the Natomas Basin of California.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The effective implementation of the 2003 Natomas Basin Habitat Conservation Plan (NBHCP), which dictates exactly how the Conservancy is to conduct its Covered Species-impact mitigation efforts.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Fully-funded activities specifically required in the NBHCP, including the design, construction and management of habitat lands. This also includes biological effectiveness monitoring to validate results. The organization is fully staffed, engages numerous third-party contractors and is provided the revenue to conduct its activities through mitigation fees, land rent, investment income and supplemental contributions and donations.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The Conservancy has effectively mitigated for the loss of habitat under the NBHCP, and done so on over 4,100 acres of land and for a period of about 20 years. Next comes further effective implementation effort, heading towards completion of the 50-year life of the NBHCP's incidental take permits issued by the federal and state authorities.
