Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Viet Nam SHADE Program
Beginning in 2009, Roots of Peace has launched its work in Vietnam to help improve the livelihoods of the impoverished rural people of the country. Designed to substantially increase incomes for the needy communities still feeling the effects of war that this country has experienced, the program will focus on both removing landmines and developing sustainable livelihoods for the impoverished people victimized by it. The program will be started with the Sustainable Highlands Agriculture Development Enterprise (SHADE) that will focus on mine and bomb removal in the mountanous regions of the DMZ, followed by replanting programs with cacao, bamboo and eel value chains. A donation of $2 will enable ROP to plant a tree and help the poorest villagers in Viet Nam.
Pennies for Peace Bamyan Girls School
Often girls in Afghanistan are the last to receive support. In Bamyan, it is no exception. There are schools for the boys, but no girls school the village of Bam Saray, the last village in a valley branching off from the city of Bamyan where the buddas were dafaced by the Taliban. ROP is building a school for 600 girls, complete with a computer lab, library, classrooms and a soccer field. The Ministry of Education in Afghanistan has endorsed the effort and will provide teachers and materials. The local people will volunteer their time to work on the construction. ROP employees in Afghanistan have already joined in contributing to this effort.
