What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Youth today grow up in a fast paced, electronic world, many have no interactions with the natural world. Future decisions will be made and policies set by today's youth. Not only is it important for our youth to be in touch with the natural world, animals can teach youth important life lessons like responsibility, empathy, and how we are all connected with the earth and all that is in it. Horse slaughter is a predatory business, fueled by profit and ignorance. The government is managing our wild horses to extinction on public lands, with many wild horses ending up going to slaughter.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

BLM Mustang Adoption/Rescue

We are committed to adopting BLM horses that are considered "surplus" by BLM,  or that end up at auction and could be euthanized or sold for slaughter.  Most of these animals are young and healthy, and can live long productive lives.  These horses will be rehabilitated if necessary, and trained using "natural" training methods.  We also aim to help new adopters with mentoring so that the adoption experience is successful in order to prevent mustangs from being returned or ending up being neglected or abused.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Still in development, this program will give youth a chance to come learn about horses. Open to students 13 yrs and older. Students learn basic horse care and safety, as well as riding skills. Once they reach a certain skill level, they can participate in the gentling of a Mustang, adopted by the program through the Bureau of Land Management. Students must keep their grades up and maintain good conduct at home, in school, and in the community.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The educate youth that would otherwise not have access to horses, about the care of horses which will create empathy for animals as well as people, and give them an incentive and the skills to excel in life. The horses used in the program are mustangs that are in danger of ending up going to slaughter.

Our top goal for 2018 is to open an equine facility with a visitor's center where the public can come and learn about mustangs and have the opportunity to see a herd of wild mustangs. We also would like to open our youth center where youth can come and learn about horses, and even participate in the gentling and training of mustangs.

We are in the process of finding property close to the greater Chico, CA area to set up the sanctuary for the Sheldon horses and a place for our youth program and visitor's center.

We are now in search of suitable property for our sanctuary.

Have saved 64 horses from slaughter.
