What we aim to solve
The Body Matters curriculum is a teaching tool for educators, including parents, teachers, and catechists. It explains the meaning of our existence, which is to love and be loved. The human body is a manifestation of this truth. Our bodies make visible the spiritual and divine. The confusion and despair that result from a culture that doesn't believe the body matters is witnessed daily. This is evidenced by the numerous inquiries TOBET receives from parents, catechists, and teachers. There is a great concern elementary school children are being given messages in our culture which devalue the body and the person, particularly regarding identity and sexuality. TOBET's Episcopal Advisory Board confirmed the decision to create an original, age-appropriate curriculum for pre-school to 8th-grade children - not only to protect them from these negative influences, but also to help them see the wonder of being made in God's image and likeness.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
TOBET provides original educational resources, presenting the truth of God's design of the body to children, youth, and families, so that all will be transformed by St. John Paul's life-affirming message of the Theology of the Body. TOBET offers talks, a curriculum for teaching the principles of the Theology of the Body to children in age-appropriate ways, and a marriage preparation program.
TOBET talks and seminars are offered at conferences, retreats, parishes, and on request on various topics, including the language of the body, the Mass, chastity, and married love.
The Body Matters, based on St. John Paul’s life-affirming Theology of the Body (TOB), is a teaching tool intended to assist primary educators (parents) in forming their children and to be inserted into existing curricula at Catholic schools and parish faith formation programs.
TOBET's goal is to share Saint John Paul's message with children and to lead all families to a closer relationship with Jesus and His Church. TOBET seeks to share the truth that the body is more than matter alone. The body reveals the whole person in body and spirit. The Body Matters curriculum has been developed, so this truth is clearly laid out to build a foundation by which children can see the value of their bodies and that their actions matter. They are integrated, whole persons. When they see the beauty of their design and the limits in that design, they can act within those boundaries. They can then find the freedom to see others with authentic, selfless love. Children will come to embrace their identity in Christ and relationship with God and others by understanding the truth of the body.
Our Theology of the Body Marriage Preparation Program is a flexible, holistic program that covers practical, down-to-earth topics to form couples to live healthy, holy marriages. Some of them include:
Communication and Safe Dialogue
Family of Origin
Conflict Resolution
Finances
Family Planning
But, TOBET4ENGAGED goes deeper. It examines all these practical topics precisely through the lens of St. John Paul’s Theology of the Body. Couples develop familiarity with TOB themes and deepen their understanding of the “whys behind the whats” of the Catholic Church’s teaching on marriage and sexuality. Some common TOB themes include:
The “Spousal” Meaning of the Human Body
Masculinity & Femininity: Archetypes, Not Stereotypes
The Sacramental Vision of Marriage
Marital Love as a Person-to-Person Encounter
And more!
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
In The Body Matters program:
From Pre-K through 8th, each grade level of the program includes:
2 Classroom Books—multiple lessons per book
Original Storybooks—enjoyable books that convey content through fictional stories!
Educator Guides and Parent Guides—for parents, educators, and catechists
This program is also in-translation to Spanish. Parent guides are being created to accompany English and Spanish versions of this program.
TOBET4Engaged now includes several evangelization teams who regularly host the program at dedicated parishes.
The TOBET team has expanded to include event planning, social media management, and data analysis. For more detailed information about program-specific strategies, contact [email protected].
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have developed an educational curriculum for children in pre-school to 8th grade. Currently we are developing a curriculum for high school students, as well as translating all materials into Spanish. We have increased our staff members and consultants from seven to fourteen. We are attentive to the age-appropriate, religious development of children, keeping this in mind as we develop our illustrated books.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have worked hard to produce 18 books in our The Body Matters curriculum. We have finished the Lesson Books and the Educator Guides, as well as Story Books and Parent Guides. The current status and scope & sequence of lesson book are as follows:
PreK- Every Body is Smart, Every Body is a Gift, and Every Body Has a Body
Level K The Body and Life; The Body is Good
Level 1 The Body Teaches Many Lessons; The Body Is Good News
Level 2 The Body Is a Gift; The Body and Holy Mass
Level 3 The Body Is God's Design; The Body and Reverence
Level 4 The Body and Friendship; The Body of Christ
Level 5 The Body as Sacrament; The Body Speaks a Language
Level 6 EveryBODY Reveals God; The Body and Heaven
Level 7 Our Bodies Made Male and Female; The Body and the Heart
Level 8 The Body and Purity; Catholicism for EveryBODY
We now assist schools and faith formation programs in training and parental support. We are translating the books into Spanish. Through our resources, TOBET helps Catholic educators and families to teach liturgy, morality, and prayer through the lens of Theology of the Body.
