FRIENDS OF SHIPLEY NATURE CENTER
We are passionate about getting people outdoors, connecting with the natural world and inspiring them to act on its behalf. We were founded with a strong focus on education and people are still at the heart of our work today.”

What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Habitat Restoration and Maintenance
Today restoration has greatly enhanced the habitat value for wildlife and has provided improved opportunities for environmental education. We demonstrate the principles of using native plants, organic living soils, recycling and water conservation. Our goal is to encourage land stewardship. We are preserving early California habitats so that children would be able to see what Huntington Beach may have been like before intense development began.
Beginning in 2002, thousands of volunteers participated in restoration activities to remove non-native plants, dead and diseased trees and re-build trails. After three years, the volunteers restored nearly 9 acres of coastal sage scrub, oak and riparian woodlands, Torrey pine forest, a meadow, and willow wetland habitats.
Environmental Education
Volunteer docents provide to tours with emphasis on California elementary school standards for environmental education. The Friends are partners with the Dept of Education’s Inside the Outdoors program. Their naturalists utilize the interpretative center and the habitat to teach elementary students science and Native American history.
Home school parents with their children who receive a close, interactive experience along the trails while viewing wildlife and native vegetation. We support this program because participation by the children will increase their social responsibility and give them the tool to make a difference in protecting our Southern California eco-system.
Conservation - California Native Plants, Composting, Water
The very foundation of Shipley Nature Center is native plants, composting and water conservation. On site growth and maintenance of California native plants and creation of organic compost. We provide seminars for the public to learn the practice and inherent virtues for water conservation and habitat ecology.
Young Adult Mentoring
A volunteer expert from Shipley has have partnered with high school leaders to provide training and leadership skills for students interested in California native habitats and connecting with the natural environment responsibly. We have donated plants to Edison High School and Fountain Valley High School. We do not receive funding from any of these schools. We began partnering with Mendez Fundamental Intermediate school in Santa Ana to install a native habitat.
We co-sponsored their annual Water Awareness Poster Contest for Orange County K-12 students at Shipley Nature Center. We do not receive funding for their use of the nature center. Forty students were recognized for their outstanding artwork at the private awards ceremony. We worked together to set up interactive, hands-on activities, an art exhibit, and water-centric education for the whole family. Board members of Friends of Shipley Nature Center gave a talk about groundwater and demonstrated how to recycle food wast
