Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Current estimates show approximately 18,000 animals entering New Orleans area municipal shelters annually. Local municipalities and a number of private nonprofit organizations provide support for the community at large by way of adoption, foster care, and spay/neuter programs, but even with decades of determined effort only about 60% of the animals entering area shelters make it out alive. State-wide the numbers are similarly bleak: a full 50% of the approximately 140,000 animals who enter Louisiana shelters each year are killed for reasons of space. Notably, cats and kittens suffer disproportionately, dying at a rate of approximately 5:1 compared to dogs and puppies.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
SpayMart Adoption Program
SpayMart runs adoption programs out of three locations: a Thrift Store & Adoption Center in Metairie, LA and PetSmart retail adoption locations in New Orleans, LA and Slidell, LA.
SpayMart Spay/Neuter Assistance Program
Provides affordable spay/neuter to animals of indigent pet owners and to homeless, feral cats. Based on a voucher system, in partnership with local veterinarians.
SpayMart Kitten Foster Program
Volunteer-based and managed, this program provides foster care for rescued kittens until they are ready for adoption. All kittens are sterilized, vaccinated, micro-chipped, and treated for parasites. Placement occurs via our adoption center in the PetSmart located in New Orleans, LA.
SpayMart Seniors for Seniors Program
Seniors for Seniors: Places senior cats with senior citizens so both can enjoy the rewards of lower stress, less loneliness, and better health. SpayMart subsidizes veterinary care, provides home assistance, and welcomes the cat back to their facility, should the need arise.
SpayMart Community/Feral Cat Program
This program significantly reduces the number of homeless stray cats in our community by providing resources for trapping, colony management, and affordable spay/neuter services.
SpayMart's Felicity Fund
Provides funding for life-saving emergency medical treatment for animals of financially disadvantaged owners.
SpayMart Rescue Transport Program
This program provides safe transport of animals to receiving shelters in the north where there is a shortage of animals and higher demand for adoption.
SpayMart Picayune Sanctuary
Established in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, SpayMart's sanctuary in Picayune is currently home to approximately 200 cats rescued from local weather disasters and abandonment. Each cat is sterilized, vaccinated, and micro-chipped, and receives all necessary care until ready for adoption at one of our centers, or rescue transport.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
REDUCE pet overpopulation in the community
PREVENT cruelty to all animals
PROMOTE respect and compassion for all animals
PROVIDE shelter and care for homeless and unwanted animals
FIND loving, forever homes for the animals in our care.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
SpayMart will continue to develop and grow its support programs, with the intention to reduce and eliminate euthanasia in New Orleans-area municipal shelters. Additionally, a bequest has allowed us to begin planning the construction of an animal health center in Jefferson Parish, a central location for serving the community via our programs. The center will include a fully-staffed veterinary clinic to provide affordable care for local pet owners.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Revenue from contributions and programs reliably support daily operations. A recent bequest will support expanding our organization, including the animal health center, staffing, and development to increase fundraising.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
SpayMart has developed as a highly regarded member of the local animal welfare community, having come into existence following Hurricane Katrina and playing an important and ongoing role in the health and care of homeless animals in the New Orleans area. Maintaining or increasing our impact while remaining financially sound represents acceptable progress in delivering our mission.
