Louisiana Dental Association Foundation

Enhancing the Oral Health of Louisiana

Mission

The mission of the Foundation is to enhance the oral health of our State by providing funding for clinical research, education, scholarships and access to care programs, as well as providing financial assistance to dental professionals and their families who are in need following natural disasters. The LDA Foundation also provides the underserved population access to care via our Louisiana Mission of Mercy or LaMOM. This event provides approximately 1,500 Louisiana residents with much-needed free dental care. The 2023 event venue in southwest Louisiana will be transformed into a large-scale dental clinic (up to 100 chairs) for the purpose of treating adults and children who have limited financial resources or are otherwise unable to visit a dental office.

Notes from the nonprofit

Over two days, hundreds of volunteer dentists, hygienists, assistants, students and community workers from across the state of Louisiana will provide services including oral exams, cleanings, specialized pediatric treatment (which includes pulpotomies and stainless-steel crowns), x-rays, fillings, extractions, anterior root canals and possibly a limited number of partial dentures. The Louisiana Mission of Mercy (LaMOM) will be an incredible dental outreach event that will take patients on a first-come, first-served basis until we reach our capacity for the day. Our goal is to serve anyone willing to come and participate, so patients from other communities are welcome and encouraged. In the Fall 2016 in New Orleans, we had 1,537 patient visits, 8,724 procedures, with almost $1.1 million in donated dental care. In 2018, there were 1,473 patient visits at the Baton Rouge LaMOM, with over $1 million in free dental care.

LA Mission of Mercy

An amazing event is coming to the Lafayette area, and it is anticipated to provide approximately 1,500 Louisiana residents with much needed free dental care. The LDA Foundation (a 501(c)(3) charitable organization), together with partners such as the Louisiana Dental Association (LDA), the LSU School of Dentistry and America’s Dentists Care Foundation, will host a Mission of Mercy (MOM) in August 2023. The Cajun Dome Convention Center will be transformed into a large-scale dental clinic (up to 100 chairs) for the purpose of treating adults and children who have limited financial resources or are otherwise unable to visit a dental office. Over two days, hundreds of volunteer dentists, hygienists, assistants, students and community workers from across the state of Louisiana will provide services including oral exams, cleanings, specialized pediatric treatment (which includes pulpotomies and stainless-steel crowns), x-rays, fillings, extractions, and anterior root canals.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The LDA Foundation works to enhance the oral health of our state by providing funding for clinical research, education, scholarships, and access to care programs, as well as providing financial assistance to dental professionals and their families who are in need. When our state suffers through a natural disaster, we offer assistance grants to dentists in need.

We would like to increase donations by reaching out to all LDA members and other potential donors to inform them of the Foundation and what we have accomplished in the past, and what we would like to accomplish in the future with their donations.

We have the ability to email all LDA members to pass on information about projects we would like to help fund, and to request donations and/or volunteers.

In February 2015 and October 2016, the LDA Foundation helped put on free dental clinics, which allowed nearly 3,000 underserved patients to get dental care that they otherwise had not been able to get.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
