Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Learning begins long before a child starts kindergarten. Research shows relationships with adult caregivers build a strong foundation of neural connections in the brain by age 3. Access to high-quality early childhood education is essential to the future success of babies, toddlers, and their families. Children who are not prepared to start school at age 5 are at risk of never catching up, leaving an achievement gap that can persist throughout their entire lives. Foster Care - On average, 7,800 children are in OKDHS custody throughout Oklahoma and are in need of safe, loving homes where they can grow and thrive. Mental Health - Oklahoma has some of the highest rates of Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders. 46 percent of all Oklahomans are in need of mental health services.

Early Care and Education Program
Access to high-quality early childhood education and care is essential to the future success of babies, toddlers, and their families. Relationships with adult caregivers build a foundation of neural connections in the brain by age 3, and has lifelong implications for health, education, and other social outcomes. Sunbeam prepares over 700 babies and toddlers living in under-resourced communities to enter school by providing high-quality Early Head Start education programs through full-day, full-year center-based services at 16 locations across Central Oklahoma and through Sunbeam’s Home Visitation program. Sunbeam’s center-based services include Educare Oklahoma City (part of the Educare Learning Network), Pierce Early Education Center, and Harbison Early Education Center. Children and families participate in the highest quality curriculum, family engagement activities, educational opportunities, and health and wellness events.
Foster Care
Sunbeam has been supporting children in foster care and foster families since the 1930s. This program welcomes foster parent applications from individuals and families regardless of marital status, sexuality, gender identity, gender expression, religion, or race.

Equity strategies

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
