Protecting Rights of Abused Children

Tulsa Lawyers for Children has only one main program, which is to provide pro bono legal representation to children in Tulsa County who have been abused and neglected and who are involved in the child welfare system.

Population(s) Served
Children and youth

TLC trains and supports volunteer lawyers from all types of professional backgrounds who agree to provide legal representation on a pro bono basis to children adjudged to be deprived as a result of child abuse and/or neglect. This TLC program has two goals: (i) provide the court resources for court appointments for conflict cases and lessen the burden of high case loads of the assistant Public Defenders, and (ii) assure that volunteer attorneys representing children have the professional skill and competence required to practice in this specialized area of the law. Services provided to accomplish these goals include assisting volunteer attorneys with trials, attending hearings when the volunteer attorney has a time conflict, operating a “tickler” system to remind volunteers of upcoming court hearings, providing a brief bank on commonly encountered legal issues, and providing volunteers access to written and online resources.

Population(s) Served
Children and youth
Foster and adoptive children
