What we aim to solve
Intergenerational poverty severely limits the potential of individuals and our community. In San Antonio, there is a significant skills gap between job listings and the applicant pool; meaning that the available workforce in San Antonio is not able to move up the ladder of economic self-sufficiency. The challenge for a family striving to exit poverty is how to feed their family and simultaneously build their career. Moreover, there are huge populations within our city disconnected from economic opportunity – whether that be individuals with a disability, with little education, or transitioning from military service back into civilian life. These disconnects harm not just an individual's ability to improve their lives, but the overall health of our community. We are one of the only organizations that focus on workforce development for a population that faces significant life barriers to employment, such as having a disability. We find meaningful work for each individual, transforming
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Good Careers Academy
The purpose of the Good Careers Academy is to provide affordable vocational training and accompanying certification to individuals who have chosen to move out of low-wage jobs into high growth occupations in the San Antonio region, allowing for a career track that puts them on the pathway to prosperity.
Good Careers Centers
These centers provide an individualized career plan and job placement, along with resources to overcome life barriers, allowing employment options for many community members who would otherwise be unemployed. We specifically serve individuals that may have a disability, low income, little to no education, or are transitioning from welfare or chronic poverty or transitioning from military service back into civilian life.
Opportunity Youth
This program is a partnership between Goodwill San Antonio, The City of San Antonio, and Community in Schools, where case management services, employment opportunities, and assistance with post-secondary education are provided to youth who are disconnected from education and employment. Youth with no workforce skills or post-secondary education plans face extremely limited options, many of which end up in generational poverty. By providing career readiness skills and industry recognized vocational skills training in high demand areas, such as healthcare, construction, and administrative services, Goodwill programs support individuals to pursue their education and career goals with essential wrap-around supports and services.
