What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

There is great need in South Texas for affordable, high-quality sexual and reproductive health care provided with compassion and without judgement. Texas has the highest percentage and highest number of residents in the nation without health insurance. People and communities need family planning in order to increase high school and college completion rates and promote economic security and professional attainment, providing more stable environments for children and reducing the government support burden. Access to sexual and reproductive health care is needed to reduced the spread of sexually transmitted infections, which also helps safeguard fertility and prevents pregnant people from passing STIs to their newborns. Screening women for breast cancer and screening, preventing, and treating cervical cancer help save lives. Pelvic exams and gynecologic tests detect problems so they can be treated before they become acute and harder and more expensive to treat.

Sexual and reproductive health care

Planned Parenthood South Texas provides birth control education and supplies, STI testing and treatment, screening and prevention of cervical cancer, clinical breast exams, pregnancy testing, pelvic exams, testing and treatment for gynecological infections, gender-affirming hormone therapy, male sexual health exams, menopause management, limited abortion navigation (at eligible sites), referrals for adoption and prenatal care, PrEP HIV prevention, and basic fertility services.

Our Stop Cervical Cancer (SCC) program is a cancer prevention and early intervention program that removes the barriers that prevent women from accessing crucial care. This program includes: Vaccines to prevent human papillomavirus (HPV), an STI that is the root cause of virtually all cases of cervical cancer; HPV tests and screening of positive HPV tests for the genotypes that cause cancer; Pap tests to screen the
cervix for cells that could lead to cancer; colposcopies (examination of the cervix using a magnifying instrument) and biopsies to diagnose cells that could lead to cancer; Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) to remove abnormal cells before they can lead to cancer; and for patients with cervical cancer, referrals and patient navigation for immediate oncological care. We also provide education about cervical cancer prevention.

Population(s) Served

Habla Con Tu Hermana program educates underserved Latina women about sexual and reproductive health and connects them with vital health services. Promotoras (state-certified community health workers) hold presentations throughout Cameron County to inform the public on important topics such as family planning, breast health, and cervical cancer prevention. In addition, they promote sexual health and responsibility through Clinica Festivals, sidewalk health fairs. Promotoras also serve as patient navigators, making appointments for women at Planned Parenthood health centers in Brownsville or Harlingen. Women who are unable to afford even a small copay receive vouchers to cover the cost of a clinical visit. We evaluate our success by tracking the number of presentations and events, the number of people reached, the number of vouchers distributed and the percentage redeemed, as well as the health care that voucher recipients receive.

Because many of our patients tell us we are their only health care provider, in 2020-2021 we rolled out primary care services at all of our health care centers. These services include screenings and treatments for diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, anemia, asthma, depression, anxiety, and much more. Virtual visits (telehealth) available for many services.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We strive to increase access to essential health care services to help people move their lives and their families forward.
Our first goal is to provide high-quality health care and health education with a superior client experience, emphasizing family planning and sexual and reproductive health. We aim to provide, continuously and consistently, the finest patient experience, including, but not limited to, operating our clinics with a DEB-positive mindset, ensuring that our health care practice is free of implicit bias, and actively pursuing efforts to eliminate ethnic and racial health disparities.
We are dedicated to educating people about sexual health and responsibility, inside our clinics and in community by utilizing community health workers.
With the Supreme Court's reversal of Roe v. Wade, we are now working to find ways to once again provide safe, legal abortion care within the state of Texas.
