Comal County Senior Citizens Foundation
Enriching the Lives of Aging Adults
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The U.S. Census Bureau recently listed Comal County as the second fastest growing county in the country with a population increase of 5.1 percent from 2016 to 2017. Last year an estimated 141,009 people were living in the county, and of this amount, 25,522 are seniors 65 years and older. The number of our clients continues to grow as the boomer generation retires but still wants to remain active. Comal County Senior Citizen's Foundation (CCSCF) will develop programs to attract this generation as well as continue programs for seniors 50+, veterans, and disabled adults. The need to provide comprehensive senior services and programs that address multiple issues at the same time is more evident now. The CCSCF will endeavor to provide these services. The programs offered at CCSCF, in coordination with our other community programs, strive to meet the needs of the aging population. The goal is to keep each individual healthy in body and mind through good nutrition, exercise, education and
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Senior Nutrition Program
Our Senior Nutrition Program has 2 nutrition parts: )1. Meals on Wheels for adults 60 years of age and over that are homebound, homebound veterans, or homebound disabled adults, that reside in Comal, Guadalupe, Karnes, or Wilson County, in Texas. )2. Congregate Meal Program is for all adults 60 years of age and older that reside in Comal, Guadalupe, or Wilson County. The meals are served at designated locations in these counties, and to participate in a meal, the client must provide their own transportation to and from the meal site.
The nutrition program helps to reduce hunger and malnutrition and promotes needed weight gain. Proper nutrition reduces risks of chronic diseases and improves cognitive function, while allowing client to live a

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal is to enrich the quality of life for aging adults by providing programs and services that offer proper nutrition, exercise, and socialization. Our program's objectives are designed to keep clients out of an institution such as a nursing home and in their homes, independent and with dignity. We want to create new programs of interest to the up-coming retiring generation, who want more physical activities, up-dated technical equipment and expanded hours.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
To accomplish our goals, CCSCF offers a wide range of programming based on the needs of the community. The focus of our programs is to develop, strengthen, and support our clients while attempting to see that they remain healthy and independent. The four main components of our programs assist our members with improving the quality of life through healthy menus approved by a licensed dietitian, better cardiovascular function, increased strength, greater flexibility and balance, enhanced endurance, and continuing education and socialization.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Comal County Senior Citizen's Foundation has become an icon due to many years of service to the community. CCSCF was established in 1984 by a small group of 17 business people here in New Braunfels, Texas. They started out in a one-room building with a dirt floor that no longer stands in downtown New Braunfels. The existing property was purchased in 1990. Volunteers helped with the renovation of the building to accommodate the needs of the growing community. Today we are considered the premier Senior Center as a resource and second home to seniors for nutrition and many activities. \r\nCCSCF is a small non-profit organization. We have a small staff that is very dedicated, highly motivated, and passionate to our mission and purpose. Our employees are empowered to perform their jobs and the organization has very low turnover (retention) of employees. Our effective organizational structure is the backbone of our success.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since the incorporation of The Comal County Senior Citizens' Foundation as a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 1984, we have grown to offer the following programs to the seniors, veterans and disabled aging adults of Comal County: Meals on Wheels, Congregate meals, Floor and Pool Exercises, Education and Socialization, a Minor Home Repair Program for low-income clients and a Thrift Store. Presently there are 19 employees and over 500 active volunteers that serve over 3000 clients and members.\r\n\r\nIn 2017, over 92,000 meals were delivered to over 400 clients with the help of 300 volunteers, and 78,000 congregate meals were served to over 380 clients in Comal County.\r\nIn March of 2018, CCSCF had the opportunity to include 3 additional counties to our Meals on Wheels and Congregate Meals Programs, which added an additional 200 (and growing) home bound individuals to our meal deliveries daily, Monday-Friday in Guadalupe, Wilson, and Karnes Counties, as well as providing additional meals to Congregate locations in Guadalupe and Wilson Counties. \r\n\r\nCCSCF also completed the plans for initiating a capital campaign to rehabilitate the CCSCF Senior Center. The campaign was launched on August 23, 2017.\r\n\r\nCCSCF envisions a substantial growth in clients and membership in the next five years. This will be made possible by the renovation of our existing Senior Center. This renovation will allow us to attract new clients and members, especially the new coming of age “Baby Boomers". We will have space to offer new programs as needed for this segment of the population. CCSCF is committed to attempting to locate the isolated seniors, disabled aging adults and veterans in Comal County and surrounding areas. We do this through our web site, social media, our News Letter, word of mouth and staying active in community awareness committees. Our hope is to have them participate in each of the Senior Wellness Programs.
