Projects sponsored by INA have helped to unravel the mysteries of both Old and New World history. Among its excavations: the Serce Limani "Glass Wreck" with the largest collection of Islamic glass in the world, the oldest dated chess set, and the largest assemblies of Byzantine tools and weapons known to exist; the oldest known shipwreck, from 1300 B.C. off Uluburun, Turkey, carrying a royal cargo of 20 tons of gold, silver, copper, tin, bronze, glass, stone and ceramics from the time of King Tut and Queen Nefertiti; Port Royal, Jamaica, the richest English colony in the New World, home to pirates and dubbed "the wickedest city in the world" at the time it sank beneath the sea during an earthquake in 1692; and the oldest known shipwreck in the New World, from only a few years after the voyages of Columbus, excavated off the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean. The Institute of Nautical Archaeology ensures that, after careful documentation and preservation, all artifacts remain the property of the country in which they were recovered.
