aka HUMANE SOCIETY OF HARLINGEN   |   Harlingen, TX   |  www.hshtx.org

Mission

The Humane Society of Harlingen takes in approximately 6,000 dogs and cats each year, and services thousands more through various community resource initiatives, including a monthly low-cost vaccination clinic and pet food pantry. HSH welcomes pets from local animal control agencies as well as from the general public. With a 2020 save rate of over 92.5%, the Humane Society of Harlingen is proud to serve as the RGV's no-kill animal shelter, ensuring that Harlingen and the greater Rio Grande Valley is a safe place for pets.

Creating families for Homeless Pets

The Rio Grande Valley Humane Society works every day to match homeless pets with families looking to welcome a new pet into their home. With free or discounted adoption fees, a pet-care corner that offers free resources to new pet parents, and inclusive adoption practices, we are working every day to make sure that pet adoption is accessible to all.

Population(s) Served

The Rio Grande Valley Humane Society operates a robust, ever-changing foster program that matches lost & homeless pets with families willing to temporarily open their homes to shelter pets. In foster homes, pets are able to grow, recover, and socialize, all while learning the ins and outs of family life. With a foster stimulus grant from Maddie's Fund, we were able to purchase a variety of supplies and resources which are offered to foster families to ensure they have everything they need to care for their foster pet without having to worry about the financial burden. Foster families provide a much needed relief to the shelter in opening up space and resources for emergency cases who often require specialized care from our staff. Our foster families are hero's in shelter pets lives!

Population(s) Served

Every month, the Rio Grande Valley Humane Society hosts a low-cost vaccination clinic where we offer affordable preventative veterinary care to members of the community. The clinic serves an average of 300 people per month. As we expand our services in 2021, we hope to provide even more during these clinics.

Every month, the Rio Grande Valley Humane Society hosts a low-cost microchip clinic where we offer at-cost microchips to members of the community. The clinic provides an average of 100 animals with a permanent form of identification to ensure that lost pets are able to reunited with their families. As we expand our services in 2021, we hope to provide even more during these clinics.

The Rio Grande Valley Humane Society hosts a Pet Food Pantry that is active every day during business hours. We welcome members of the community to come by the shelter to get free food and supplies for their pets whenever they need them. The pantry utilizes donations to maintain a supply and works to keep families together during difficult times. As we expand our lifesaving efforts in 2021, we hope to expand this service to serve more families.
