What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Partner Classes

Partner Classes (formerly Writers in Communities) sends professional writers into diverse community settings – shelters, schools, neighborhood centers, detention facilities – to work alongside students of all ages, needs, interests, and abilities. These workshops – always free to participants – focus on oral traditions, reading, and creative writing, and because we publish work by each student, represent for many their first acknowledged success with language.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Our public classes include year-round creative writing workshops, free public readings, author talks, and more. Classes and author events are available onsite, online, and as hybrid offerings. Major events include our biannual Autograph Series featuring renowned visiting authors such as Margaret Atwood, Terrance Hayes, and Ben Fountain, and our virtual monthly book club and author series, The Big Texas Read, highlighting the diverse and groundbreaking writers of Texas once a month with lively author talks--all free and accessible by Zoom. We pride ourselves on a diverse and dynamic roster of teaching artists, from Express-News columnist Cary Clack to 2015 US Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera, Dr. Norma Cantu, and award-winning poets Patricia Spears Jones and Naomi Shihab Nye, among others. Our goal: to bring the transformative power of the writing arts into the lives of San Antonians, South Texans, and writers nationwide of all skill levels and backgrounds.

Population(s) Served

Gemini Ink helps emerging writers take that next step in their writing lives by offering them the opportunity to work on a manuscript-length project over a 6-month period with a noted author. This literary coaching has empowered many of our past mentees to cross that literary bridge to book or chapbook publication. We offer our mentorship 2-3x/year and provide opportunities for writers working in various genres from poetry to fiction, nonfiction and genre-blurring projects. Previous mentors have been John Phillip Santos, Amanda Eyre Ward, Laura Van Prooyen, Nan Cuba, and other seasoned writers and teachers of writing. Mentees have gone on to win major book awards and to thrive with a broadened sense of their abilities to develop and support a writing life and career they enjoy and one reflective of their personal aesthetics.
