What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Career Center
The Career Center is at the heart of job seeking. DFS San Antonio is designated a certified "Work Search" site, and all new clients are oriented to options. They can begin with up to four career assessments resulting in best career matches, then follow up with testing, job leads, training modules and skills certifications. Or, clients may proceed directly to use the other Career Center resources including computers and printers for job searches and communicating with potential employers. Individual assistance with resumes, interviewing, negotiation, and business etiquette is also available. Special programs are also offered, such as a bi-monthly "Interview Skills Practice" night and a quarterly "Ex-offenders Employment Discussion Groups," and a myriad of workshops. To date, more than 300 Work Search accounts have been created, among the top three sites (of 113 Dress for Success affiliates located in 23 countries) allowing for on-line classes and job search.
Suiting
In the Suiting Program, which follows introduction to the Career Center, clients receive an interview appropriate outfit, which may include either a suit, jewelry, hose, purse, and shoes. Upon employment, clients may also select up to a week's additional apparel to grow their work wardrobes. The Suiting Program is also an opportunity to educate clients on the importance of affect and attitude. These "dressing room encounters," enable staff to work one-on-one with clients to help boost confidence, presentation and interpersonal skills in a non-threatening setting. Total suitings in 2009 equaled 1,117.
Professional Women's Group
Securing a job is only the beginning of the journey to self-sufficiency. Understanding the written and unwritten rules of the workplace, learning to be appropriately assertive, and negotiating for opportunities are learned skills. Upon securing employment, every client is eligible to join the Professional Women's Group (PWG), a unique aspect of the Dress for Success process, which affords ongoing support, networking, topical speakers, access to scholarships and training opportunities, and leadership development. Emphasis in the group is on employment retention and upward mobility. Currently, with 123 active members, including 66 new members, more than 80% of PWG members have retained their positions or been promoted in the past year.
Employment Retention
Keeping a job can be a challenge for anyone. These programs focus on helping you remain employed, providing you with strategies to nurture your professional growth. We want to ensure you feel more stable in your career and in your ability to develop your professional skills.
Job training
Clients have access to more than 300 on-line courses, at no charge, to expand or reinforce their skills sets. They may also test and receive certificates to validate their skills for prospective employers.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
100% of clients are zero to low income, actively seeking work. Our goal is to assist, not only with finding a job, but with opening the doors to meaningful work, economic stability and sustainability, and upward mobility. We also provide post-employment support and leadership development training.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
- Utilize individual assessments of life circumstances, linkages to resources and orientation to program options
- Review and interpret interest assessments for each client; introduce basic and advanced learning sites on-line
- Provide classroom and/or individual instruction on traditional search skills (e.g., resumes, mock interviews) and non-traditional contemporary skills such as Skype interviews; self-awareness and self-esteem; financial literacy; etc.
- Educate on professional dress and demeanor; provide professional apparel for interviews and employment
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Dress for Success San Antonio is an affiliate of a worldwide organization, which provides support (non-monetary) and extensive name recognition. In San Antonio since 2002, we enjoy an excellent reputation for professionalism and compassion, and word of mouth is our best reference. Of course, we also have a presence on social media. Well regarded among the non-profit community, we regularly receive referrals from over 100 partners. And, our corporate partners are supportive with monetary contributions or in-kind donations.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have successfully accomplished building varied relationships in the city, satisfying client needs (99% very good or excellent routinely indicated on satisfaction surveys), increasing the number of employed and productive citizens, expanding programs and services, solidifying a dedicated Board of Directors and acquiring a permanent home. As is true for all non-profit organizations, we need to continuously build and maintain sustainable funding.
