What we aim to solve
Many children around the world have little to no access to medical care. HeartGift was founded to address this disparity of care. Specifically with congenital heart defects.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
HeartGift
Each year 1 million babies are born throughout the world with congenital heart disease. Over 100,000 of these will not live to see their first birthday without our help. The large majority of these children live in underserved countries where medical treatment is unavailable. In developed countries a child born with a heart defect is quickly diagnosed and treated, regardless of the ability to pay. In the rest of the world that is not the case. Founded in Austin, Texas in 2000, HeartGift was founded to address this alarming disparity in the access to care. Today, HeartGift has served nearly 500 children from 34 countries around the world.
Patient referrals come through partnerships with international aid organizations, medical missions and family members. Physicians who serve on the HeartGift team donate 100% of their time, contributing over $23 million of in-kind services to date. HeartGift cares for children by bringing them to the United States for surgery, as well as providing surgery for them closer to their homes where appropriate medical exists.
With just one surgery, a child's heart is mended, their life is saved, and their quality of life is dramatically improved.
