What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Crossroads Youth Ranch presently uses a four-part program to work with youth to show them a better way of dealing with every aspect of their lives. The academic program, through the traditional approach, is developed to provide students with the best possible program of studies. We believe the traditional system of education educates the mind and builds character. Most of the teens we work with are in judicial trouble because there is academic trouble. Therefore we begin begin a thorough academic assessment to determine strengths and weaknesses. Weaknesses are remediated and strengths are amplified through the traditional home-school approach. From individual counseling to therapeutic group sessions, from dealing with the personal issues of the teen to dealing with the family issues as a whole, every aspect is worked through. We take advantage of daily opportunities to carry out therapeutic sessions in what is termed "the need of the moment sessions." Unlike usual therapeutic sessions that deal with events a few days old, at Crossroads, issues are dealt with within minutes of the actual incident, behavior, or attitude. We believe that the heart of character training is obedience, which will eventually cultivate an inner self-discipline and is essential to the emotional, physical, social and spiritual well being of the resident. Each teen is given the opportunity to develop a strong work ethic and develop employable skills. The final component is Adventure Quest, a ropes challenge course. Adventure Quest uses structures made of ropes, steel cable, and wood to provide opportunities for participants to increase self-confidence while building cooperation among group members. The ropes course is designed to emphasize personal growth and development. As a result, the individual becomes a stronger person and a confident team member. The individual participant sets a personal goal and works to achieve that goal. Other group members offer verbal support and praise. The participant succeeds by trying, not necessarily completing the activities. Personal and group reactions to the events are shared during an evaluation session led by the course facilitator. Learning how to cooperate, learning how to communicate positively, and accepting responsibility for one's own actions and reactions are key components to Adventure Quest.
