What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

An estimated 1 in every 2 seniors is at risk of malnutrition. About 1 in 5 seniors suffers from loneliness and social isolation. These problems contribute to deteriorating health and increased financial strain on these individuals, their families, and also the community at large (due to increased public healthcare expenditures). Hot, nutritious meals provide proper nutrition to improve cognitive functioning, maintain muscle mass, decrease client fall risk, and more. Volunteers who deliver the meals provide social connection and daily wellness checks, to ensure the safety of our seniors. Meals on Wheels Collin County is the ONLY agency providing home delivered meals to homebound seniors and disabled adults. Without our program, many seniors would be prematurely placed in assisted living or nursing homes due to their inability to shop for food or prepare their own meals.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The goal of our organization is to assist area seniors in remaining independent in their homes, to promote socialization, and to prevent premature institutionalization. To accomplish this mission, we provide resources and assistance far beyond a meal.

In addition to home delivered meals, our organization also provides durable medical equipment, nutrition, transportation, and pet support for area seniors. More specifically we do this through programs such as Senior Safety Net, Shower Baskets, Shelf Stable, Adopt-a-Route, Adopt a Senior, and PAWS. The mission and outcomes of these programs are listed below.

- Senior Safety Net provides items such as Boost, Ensure, Depends, walkers, wheelchairs, heaters, fans, and other necessities.
- Shower Baskets provide clients with daily hygiene products such as shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotion, body wash, loofahs, deodorant, hand towels, etc...
- Shelf Stables provide meals that contain nonperishable foods so that seniors can still eat on days we are unable to deliver due to inclement weather and/or holidays. These items include low sodium soups, peanut butter, crackers, fruit cups, tuna, chicken salad, rice & beans, and raisin/cranberry packs.
- Adopt-a-Route expands our volunteer base by tailoring to fit the needs of our volunteers. When a company signs up, co-workers join together to assume responsibility for a route weekly where they take turns delivering meals each week on their lunch hour. This provides minimal commitment for volunteers to be respectful of their busy workday while also serving the community.
- Adopt-a-Senior takes donations to help feed seniors for either a week, month, or year depending on the amount you want to contribute.
- PAWS provides support for seniors with home-bound pets with resources such as cat food, cat litter, treats, dog food, toys, and pet store gift cards. Research shows that pets have significant health benefits, including decreased blood pressure, companionship, and improved mental health. Many clients either give their meals to their pets and/or are unable to take care of their pets, so we began providing these vital supplies to ensure our seniors and their pets remain united and that neither goes hungry.

We are a team of trained and accomplished professionals with a unified mission. Not only that, but we are seeing regular growth in our finances to better resource our community.

Social Workers conduct assessments/home visits and connect them with community resources to ensure that clients' needs are being met so that may remain independent. The Social Worker also conducts critical follow-up for missed meals, emergencies, and concerns from caregivers or volunteers. The reassessments annually determine the change in nutritional, environmental, social, and mental status. Social Workers utilize an evaluation tool developed by Baylor Scott and White Applied Health Research to track current health conditions, food insecurity in rural areas, and isolation.

From October 2019 to September 2020, Meals on Wheels Collin County (MOWCC) served over 292,000 meals to more than 1,800 unduplicated clients in Collin County.

Our 2020 annual client survey revealed that:

* 94% of our clients state that MOWCC services help them remain independent within their homes.
* 95% of clients state that MOWCC helps them eat healthier.
* 95% of clients state that the MOWCC program helps them feel better.
* 98% of our clients would recommend this program to their friends.
