What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Preservation Awards
WCHS recognizes and awards the efforts of individuals, businesses, and non-profits that practice historic preservation, restoration, and rehabilitation each year with our Preservation Awards. Award categories include Preservation, Restoration, Adaptive Reuse, and Phoenix Awards for both residential and commercial properties, as well as individual honors for Preservation Service, Special Achievement, Pioneer Spirit, and Appreciation. An awards banquet to celebrate their achievements is held during National Preservation Month.
Kell House Museum
The Kell House, built by Frank Kell in 1909, and located at 900 Bluff is the grand dame and crown jewel of Wichita Falls. Former home of the Kell family and purchased by WCHS in 1980, she is in need of tender love and care. The current project of WCHS is to rehabilitate the Kell House Museum to its former glory. The process began in 2011, and foundation stabilization has been completed. A Capital Campaign was launched in 2017 to raise the money needed for remaining areas in need of repair. Work on the historic house museum began in November 2021 and is projected to continue through June 2022. The current restoration work will concentrate on the exterior, and include window restoration, porch repair, woodwork restoration, and brick repointing.
Old Fashioned Fourth of July and Most Patriotic Parade
This wonderful, family-friendly event has been a staple of Wichita Falls’ Independence Day since the Kell House first opened. The morning begins with a children’s bike, trike, and stroller parade that also includes antique car and specialty categories. The parade winds its way from downtown to the Kell House, where a patriotic program including parade winners, speeches, music, and skits awaits on the front porch. After the program, fun and games are available until Noon. This public favorite takes place every year.
Santa House
Possibly the most beloved of all Kell House events, Santa House is a celebration of the Christmas season. For ten days, the Museum is transformed into a winter wonderland of the sights, smells, sounds, and tastes of Christmas. Children are guided through a special tour of the Museum, including a Christmas themed play, a visit with Santa, special visit to Mrs. Claus kitchen, and making an ornament to take home. This is a wonderful first impression for little ones of how much fun learning about history can be!
Haunted Tours at the Kell House
A popular and visitor favorite explores all the strange and odd things that have occured in the Kell House Museum. Guided tours cover funerary history, Wichita Falls history, and tell the stories of the slightly odd (and possibly paranormal) events that have occured in the historic house museum over the last forty-plus years.
