Deaf Action Center

Deaf Action Center provides sign language interpreters, oral interpreters, and CART. We operate a Senior Citizens Center in cooperation with the Dallas Area Agency on Aging that includes daily hot meals, transportation, field trips, social activities, benefits counseling, casework assistance, health screenings and communication support. DAC is also a distribution center the North Texas Food Bank. DAC provides training and general information on hearing loss, the ADA, and the use of assistive listening equipment in schools, civic organizations, businesses and other service organizations. People who are Hard of Hearing or who lose their hearing later in life can get assistance from DAC's Hard of Hearing Services. Coping strategies, assistive devices, and support groups are all available. DAC assists individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing to access medial care, schools, transportation, employment services, legal and other social services. DAC responds to thousands of calls requesting information about services, both locally and nationwide, in such areas as hearing loss, sign language, hearing health care, hearing aids, employment, assistive technology and problem solving. DAC staff networks with area employers, businesses and agencies to facilitate applicant screening, job placement, technical assistance, follow-up and on-site interpreting services. Literacy services are provided to people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Classes and individual tutoring are available in the areas of reading, writing, math and computer skills. American Sign Language classes are also available. Confidential counseling is provided by a licensed counselor able to communicate directly with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. Emphasis is on a safe, confidential setting. Counseling provided is educational, nonjudgmental and culturally sensitive. DAC manages and rents a 40-unit apartment complex of one and two bedroom apartments to individuals and families with deaf and hard of hearing members. The apartments provide a safe, supportive and cost-effective living environment. Residents participate in various DAC programs.
