What we aim to solve
Permian Basin Adult Literacy Center provides three primary service areas to address local adult literacy needs: English Language Learning (ELL); Adult Education and Literacy (AEL – reading, writing, math, computers); and Digital Literacy (DL).
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Permian Basin Adult Literacy Center Program
By offering three distinct services that address English Language Learning (ELL), Adult Education & Literacy (AEL), and Digital Literacy (DL), PBALC is extending hope to adults who feel that limited literacy has ended their opportunities. Each individual who enrolls in our program is interviewed and assessed by the PBALC Program Coordinator to determine his or her current level and future goals. The student is then matched with a trained volunteer tutor (in a one-to-one, small group, or class setting) or set up on one of our self-paced, staff-monitored computer programs. Throughout the student’s time with PBALC, the staff continually provides support through progress checks, resources, and encouragement.

In addition to the end of several long-term partnerships, our class locations moved from external venues to our primary location, which has limited space. However, student dedication improved greatly.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal is to provide quality tutoring services to every adult in our community who wants and needs them. Whether in one-to-one, small group tutoring, or self-paced studying, we strive to provide a quality, comfortable environment which encourages students to commit to pursuing their literacy goals.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Each student who enrolls in our program is interviewed and assessed for their current level and future goals. Students have access to one-to-one and small group tutoring, as well as self-paced, staff-monitored computer programs accessible in our Computer Lab during office hours, or remotely on their own schedule. Students interested in or best suited for one-to-one tutoring are matched with a PBALC-trained volunteer tutor based on compatibility, scheduling, and availability.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The obstacles faced by our students often create barriers in traditional educational settings: the inability to read, limited English proficiency, unfamiliarity with technology, or the lack of a high school diploma. Due to our size and organizational philosophy, we have the unique opportunity to create a quality, comfortable environment for the adults who seek our services.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
PBALC tracks students' progress and improvement towards their personal literacy goals (including reading, writing, and English-speaking skills) in correlation to the number of instructional hours each individual accumulates. In the future, we will continue to grow our program and unique learning environment, as well as initiate meaningful offsite collaborations in order to accommodate and serve more students.
