What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Affordable homeownership is an increasingly rare opportunity. The gap between area median income and median home sales prices is broadening every year, which means that the need and market for affordable homeownership is growing annually. Most of the affordable homes currently available are older, dilapidated, or poorly built.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Habitat for Humanity Abilene's goals are as follows:

1. To increase our new home production to average a minimum of ten homes per year.
2. To develop a neighborhood revitalization program that helps owner-occupants in low-to-moderate income neighborhoods improve their homes while improving their neighborhoods.
3. To make our work fiscally sustainable through creative adaptation of the Habitat model and partnership with local financial organizations.

Our short-term strategies for accomplishing the above goals include:

1. Maximizing our available construction funding by applying appropriate subsidies to the sales prices of homes we sell to our our partner families, rather than over-subsidizing homes and therefore limiting our construction funding.
2. Creating home-financing opportunities for our partner families by working with local banks and other financial institutions, rather than only offering Habitat-financed home ownership opportunities.
3. Utilizing volunteers primarily as advocates for our overall mission, rather than assuming their primary value is as a source of free construction labor.

With financial and construction partnerships across Abilene, Habitat for Humanity Abilene is uniquely qualified to be the primary source of affordable homeownership in the Big Country.

Since 1990, Habitat for Humanity Abilene has built 175 homes with and for our partner families. While our progress slowed to less than one home per year from 2019-2021, we are currently rebuilding our capacity. Since then we have completed four new homes, and are slated to complete at least five homes this year.
