What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
GSM Food Pantry
Good Samaritan provides both perishable and non-perishable food staples to families who find themselves facing food insecurity and who reside in Brown county, Texas. Families may come once a month as needed.
Food for Thought
GSM partners with schools in Brown county to provide weekend nutrition to students who are identified as chronically hungry by school personnel. Child-friendly food is sent home on Friday afternoons. There will be enough food for 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners and 2 snacks. The food provides 60% of the child's weekend nutritional needs. If there are younger siblings in the home, a food bag is sent for them as well
The Deer Project
Good Samaritan's Food Pantry partners with area bow and rifle hunters of white-tailed deer, which are plentiful in our area to provide a ready source of protein for our hungry clients. Hunters are encouraged to use all of their hunting tags to harvest deer to be donated to the food pantry. The venison is ground and placed into 2-lb chubs and distributed through our Food Pantry. There is no cost to the hunter.
Samaritan Aid
Samaritan Aid assists families who find themselves in financial crisis and in need of assistance with utility and/or rent payments. The client is required to pay a portion of the bill up front in good faith and then Good Samaritan pays the remainder to the utility provider on behalf of the client.
Good Samaritan Clothing Room
Good Samaritan sells good, used clothing, household items, shoes and wot-nots at very low prices (most items are 50 cents or 3 pieces for $1) to help families stretch their budgets. Money made from the clothing room is then put back into the general operations of the ministry.
Senior Care and Homebound Program
Food is delivered to the homes of senior and/or homebound adults who have been referred due to their current malnutrition or being at-risk of malnutrition and are unable to access our Food Pantry
Homeless Food Boxes
A box is filled with non-perishable food items for homeless individuals. They may come every two weeks to receive a box of food and if needed, hygiene items, sleeping bag and blankets
The Pig Project
Money is raised to purchase show pigs from youth who have entered their pig into the county's Youth Fair. At the conclusion of the Fair, pigs are purchased from the youth then fed for several weeks to eliminate any antibiotics, etc.and to fatten them up. They are then slaughtered and the meat is ground and delivered to Good Samaritan's Food Pantry.
