Mission

The mission of the Humane Society of West Texas is to ensure the best possible quality of life for animals and to promote respect and reverence for life. To that end, we strive to:
• find homes for abandoned and abused animals
• prevent cruelty to animals;
• rescue animals in abusive and life threatening conditions;
• control pet populations;
• provide education, information, and action for humane care of animals.
To accomplish our mission, we maintain an adoption program, a feral cat project, a network of foster homes, volunteer training, and a wellness clinic. We make healthy and well-socialized animals available for adoption as a PetsMart Adoption Partner. We also operate a Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) program for feral cats to help control the population of free roaming cats in our community. Our adoptable animals are kept in foster homes to learn social skills as part of a family. We train both adult and teen volunteers in humane care and treatment of animals. We operate a wellness clinic, making every effort to provide an excellent quality of care prior to adoption. We manage all these programs with an all-volunteer staff.

Rescue and Adoptions - HSWT

HSWT maintains a relinquishment center and wellness clinic where the public brings lost, injured, or abused cats or dogs, primarily, though we have taken in the occasional bird, ferret, rabbit, or snake (exotic). We restore their health and/or trust and make them ready for adoption. Primarily, our animals are kept in foster homes to socialize and heal them so that we can be confident of their behavior with other animals and with children. Our pets are neutered, micro chipped, and vaccinated before adoption.

We maintain a Feral Cat program. The adults are trapped, neutered and returned to their habitat. Kittens are socialized and adopted out through our regular foster/adoption program.

We investigate and report cruelty and abuse and have the services of a certified cruelty investigator. We have cooperated with law enforcement in animal seizures and rehoming and we maintain close communications with law enforcement throughout the region.
