What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Apprentice Program

YSO student are given the opportunity to audition to be an apprentice in the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra each year. Four students are selected to participate and receive private coaching and mentoring by a professional musician during one semester of the school year. After several weeks of rehearsals and lessons, the students are invited to play side-by-side their professional mentor at a symphony concert.

The YSO partners with the Wichita Falls Independent School District to provide quality beginning strings instruction for K-5th students in local elementary schools.

A one week intensive music instruction experience for beginning through advanced students, including private and small group tutoring and a final concert.

The Symphonic Orchestra is the flagship ensemble of the organization, performing intermediate to advanced standard full orchestral repertoire, which includes strings, winds and percussion. This group rehearses on Sunday afternoons form 2-4 pm in the Instrumental Rehearsal Hall at MSU under the direction of Dr. Susan Harvey.

This ensemble provides young musicians the opportunity to perform challenging music and to develop leadership skills through principal chair positions and mentoring of younger players.

Formed in 2012, the Philharmonic Orchestra, is a strings only developmental ensemble performing beginner and/or intermediate orchestral arrangements. Audition opportunities for students take place in May, August and January every season. Students rehearse once a week on Sunday afternoons from 2-4 pm at the Fain Fine Arts building at Midwestern State University.

Dr. Matthew Luttrell is the current conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra.
