Housing, Hope and Help for Single Pregnant Women
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Single women with children are now the highest demographic of homeless people in our country. Additionally many women who find themselves without support are pregnant. There are very few places for single pregnant women to live in a Christian environment that will equip them for parenting and help with restoration in familial relationships. Most women considering abortion state a lack of support as the most compelling reason for choosing abortion. Mercy House's primary goal is to help every woman avoid choosing abortion by providing the support needed to live a productive and happy life with her child. This includes providing the physical, emotional and spiritual support needed to move from her crisis to creative and joyful living.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Baby Boot Camp
This program is a hands on curriculum designed to equip single pregnant women with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively parent their babies. This program uses books, videos, and trained volunteers to help mothers with preparation for childbirth, lactation and infant feeding, parenting an infant, parenting a toddler, infant massage and touch, shaken baby syndrome, infant first aid and CPR, infant car seat safety, preparing a budget and financial responsibility, planning for independent living.
Resident Service Plan
The resident service plan is a document created to identify the specific needs of the resident while staying in the program and the group home. The service plan creates a time line for action steps for both resident and case manager as goals are set and completed. Service plan goals include counseling, housing, job planning assistance, educational goal setting, completion of GED, completion of driver's education and licensing, any other specific personal goal that the resident may have special need of.

A SAFE HOME
Caring staff provide a safe, nurturing home environment during the pregnancy and for up to six months after delivery.
COMPLETE PREGNANCY CARE
Each woman is provided complete prenatal, labor and delivery and postpartum care from pro-life midwives and doctors.
COUNSELING
Professional counselors meet with Mercy House residents to assist them with the resolution of family issues, emotional struggles and spiritual concerns. Emphasis is always placed on confronting these problems with the truth of God’s Word.
EDUCATION
The priority of education in preparation for a solid, stable life is strongly encouraged for each Mercy House resident. We provide help with preparation for a general equivalency diploma as well as higher educational goals such as vocational training or college classes. We continually stress the importance of education as a key to a strong, self-supporting future.
LIFE SKILLS TRAINING
Individual and group instruction assist in helping our residents with the skills needed to establish a healthy home. These include parenting instruction, basic infant care and safety, nutrition and cooking, healthy lifestyle training and any other area identified in each individual resident’s life. The training is formal as well as modeled by all Mercy House staff and volunteers.
SPECIAL ISSUE ASSISTANCE
Unique, individual needs such as acquiring a driver’s license, resolving a legal issue, or completing unfinished business are prioritized and assisted by our volunteers as part of the service plan we create for each resident.
SPIRITUAL MINISTRY
Strong emphasis is placed on each woman’s involvement in a local church. Household devotions and weekly Bible study are priorities. We encourage each resident to understand that the support of a vibrant body of believers is critical to her future success.
RESOURCE FAMILIES
Residents enjoy extended relationships with mentoring families who provide additional emotional and physical support. Each family is included in her life as a model of health and the beauty of functional living.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our greatest strategy is modeling. When a woman moves into our home she experiences first hand the power of healthy, functional family living. With a live-in House Pastor these women see and experience a loving marriage, healthy parenting, disciplined life habits, and what it is like to be supported and truly loved. Many women have not experienced these things and the impact is profound. We also believe in emotional and spiritual healing. This involves individual counseling for each woman, as well as prayer and exposure to truth in both individual and institutional settings through church attendance, support group attendance and bible studies. Our belief is that change in behavior only truly happens after a change in the heart.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are doing this through our residential home, our Baby Boot Camp and our staff. We also have a volunteer pool of 120 individuals, from stay at home moms to a pool of professional volunteers, providing childbirth education and birth services, chiropractic care, lactation consulting, doula services, legal assistance, job training, GED assistance, budgeting and financial planning. Every woman has a primary mentor assisting her through her process as well as the staff at Mercy House.
The residential home is equipped to provide for each woman's needs entirely throughout her pregnancy and for up to one year after.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We are currently evaluating and collecting data. Each board member has deliverables for our next meeting in February at which time we will report and make our initial changes and plans. Of critical importance is staff evaluation and program effectiveness. We will also be conducting planning meetings for fundraising and additional financial support.
