What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

As a rural area, residents of Steuben County faced difficulty gaining access to high-speed internet, which is increasingly necessary today for business, remote learning, and staying connected. SCFN was created as a supporting organization at Steuben County Community Foundation so that nonprofits, public agencies, and local businesses could benefit from low cost, reliable internet access. SCFN lays the groundwork for this by providing dark fiber access, offering the county high speed, large bandwidth infrastructure and returning profits to the community through endowment funds at the Steuben County Community Foundation.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

SCFN's goal is to provide access to broadband fiber to all residents of Steuben County, while also contributing to the local communities by returning profits for grantmaking at the Steuben County Community Foundation.

Steuben County Fiber Network deploys fiber throughout all cities and towns in Steuben County, connecting to government, business, health, and educational institutions. This is an open access network, meaning that SCFN owns the infrastructure and leases fiber usage to service providers. As a result, customers enjoy lower rates than would be otherwise available.

Steuben County Fiber Network has successfully attracted private and government funds to deploy the network throughout the county. The board is well rounded in local expertise, from economic development to technology and infrastructure, and they will guide SCFN to make strategic decisions for the future.

Although we have grown steadily over the years, Steuben County Fiber Network has not yet reached all potential customers throughout Steuben County. Since its inception in 2007, SCFN has grown to over 150 miles of dark fiber and returned over $16,500 to the Steuben County Community Foundation for grantmaking.
