What we aim to solve
20% of U.S. children (ages 3-17) have been diagnosed with an emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenge. The parents and families of these children can struggle to get support and often feel alone because they face more barriers to doing things that other families can do, such as connecting with other families or going on vacation. Many times, it can be difficult to find the right resources that are tailored for their family's specific needs.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Family Camp

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Camp Get-A-Way exists to provide a safe and non-judgmental camping experience for families of children facing emotional, mental, or behavioral challenges. It aims to be a place where they can rediscover the joy of being a family, connect with people in similar situations, find resources for their specific needs, and learn new skills to address these challenges.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We provide a 3-4 day camping experience where families get to participate in fun activities, such as tie-dye, arts and crafts, archery, and a campfire, among other things. We also offer quality training, support, and access to state representatives to help with access to services. By bringing together New York families facing similar challenges, these families are able to find a sense of community.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have partnered with multiple campsites around the state of New York to provide overnight sessions and day camps in 2024 where families can enjoy the great outdoors, spend time with one another in a non-judgmental environment, learn new skills, find tailored resources, and connect with other families. . Our trained staff are able to offer support throughout the camp session as well as model helpful behaviors with identified children and their siblings.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
This summer will mark 22 years of Camp Get-a-Way! We started by providing one session per summer, but have grown to be able to offer 5 different overnight sessions and various day camps, in regions all across the state of New York. We've also been recognized with a "What's Great in Our State" award from the state of New York.
