What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

*It is a fact that suicide is a major issue among military veterans, with recent statistical studies showing that 22 veterans a day commit suicide. PGA HOPE is working to change this statistic. *Participants of PGA HOPE programs include military veterans living with physical or cognitive challenges such as Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and amputees, among other challenges. *The Department of Veterans Affairs research and clinical experience verify that physical activity is important to maintaining good health, speeding recovery and improving overall quality of life. For many injured veterans, adaptive sports provide their first exposure to physical activity after injury. *PGA HOPE programming is fully funded by the NCPGA Foundation and offered at NO COST for military veterans.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

PGA HOPE Northern California

PGA HOPE Northern California (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) is the flagship program of the NCPGA Foundation. PGA HOPE Northern California (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) introduces golf to all military Veterans regardless of age, sex, or branch of service in order to enhance their mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing. It is a therapeutic program to aid in the rehabilitation process for all Veterans, with the majority served being disabled Veterans. Veterans learn the rules of the game, and for those already familiar with it, the professionals help them refine their skills. As many Veterans struggle with civilian life, the game of golf helps them transition and find meaning and hope. VA Secretary Robert McDonald stated, "I am confident that our Veterans will use this introduction as a platform to reenergize their competitive spirit, as well as to reengage back into their communities."

PGA HOPE is the only Veteran adaptive sports program led by PGA Professionals and apprentices certified in adaptive golf instruction for Veterans with varying levels of disabilities, and acts in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.

Data
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
