What we aim to solve
There is a lack of trained Facility Management professionals entering the workforce. The average age of a Facility Manager is 49 and in 5 to 15 years 50% of the existing workforce will retire. We are graduating approximately 4,000 facility management students per year from accredited degree programs, yet the annual demand for graduates from a few global firms is greater than this number. Buildings are smart today and require more advanced technical knowledge than the normal training programs offered. With the lack of enough skilled FMs, buildings and infrastructure will not be maintained properly resulting in public safety issues. Employers are having trouble filling millions of middle-skill and management jobs in facility management.

Global Workforce Initiative
The Global Workforce Initiative (GWI) addresses the triple bottom line of Economy, Equity, and Environment. Meeting this demand is critical to the energy efficiency of the built environment, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing economic productivity of these buildings, and providing education and employment opportunities in the profession of facility management. What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The IFMA Foundation's Global Workforce Initiative is addressing the Facility Management talent gap. The need for Facility Management professionals is growing worldwide due to the aging workforce. Facility Management is a well-paid profession that cannot be off shored. There is nearly a 100% job placement for people graduating with an accredited Facility Management degree. The IFMA Foundation provides the credentials and educational programs to train the future workforce. The Global Workforce Initiative unleashes the power of individuals’ potential with new skills and opportunities for employment for both middle skill level and college educated job seekers.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
WE EDUCATE students and incumbent workers through our education programs to prepare students for the facility management profession including our Facility Management:
• Accredited Degree Programs (ADP) - Associates, Bachelors, or Master's Degree in Facility Management
• Registered Degree Programs (RDP) - Academic certificate (18 credits) in Facility Management
• Talent Development Pipeline Programs (TDP) - Globally recognized Essentials of Facility Management (EoFM) Certificate
WE INVEST in the future by providing new career opportunities through scholarships, internship and apprenticeship programs, career fairs, job listings, job shadowing and our Ignite FM! student competitions.
WE CONNECT with communities to inform students, parents, teachers, guidance counselors, community organizations, economic development and government agencies about an exciting and prosperous career opportunity.
EDUCATING STUDENTS AND INCUMBENT WORKERS
Our facility management educational programs can be customized for organizations depending on their needs to fill knowledge gaps, program requirements or learn in a comfortable environment with the support and encouragement of peers. The Global Workforce Initiative has educational courses and programs for use at the high school, community college, 4-year institution and post-graduate levels.
For the profession to grow, it is essential to increase the number of college graduates with Facility Management degrees.
The Accredited Degree Program has created degree opportunities for more than 4,000 FM students annually at 23 colleges and universities in eight countries, The standards for these degree programs are designed to meet the demands of the rapidly changing and evolving Facility Management profession and to ensure these new colleagues are well-equipped to meet the demands of Facility Management now and in the future. The IFMA Foundation works with communities to grow the number of FM Accredited Degree programs.
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE
Through the IFMA Foundation Scholarship Program, recipients receive a cash award and fully subsidized IFMA World Workplace conference travel, registration and participation. The individual scholarships range in value from $1,500 to $10,000 and are awarded to undergraduate (2- year and 4-year) and graduate students enrolled in facility management or FM related programs. Scholarship recipients also participate in our globally recognized signature IgniteFM! Student Competition.
Our Internships and apprenticeship programs offer a win-win situation for both the organization and the student while providing the organization with talented students who offer new knowledge and skills. Many employers often use their internship programs as a testing ground for hiring future full-time employees after graduation. The benefit is that employers can see first-hand what the intern has to offer should they be hired on full-time.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The IFMA Foundation holds Special NGO Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Established in 1990, Our scholarship program has awarded more than $1.7 million dollars to more than 636 students since the program started. For over 23 years, the IFMA Foundation has been the globally recognized accreditation body for Facility Management Associate, Bachelors and Masters’ degree programs. There are currently 26 Facility Management accredited degree and talent development pipeline programs around the world with 10 more programs expected to come on board in 2020. There is nearly a 100% job placement for students graduating from our accredited degree programs. The IFMA Foundation partners with the business community, government agencies and International Facility Management Association (IFMA) membership to provide student programs including scholarships, internships, apprenticeships, job shadowing and IgniteFM! student competitions. Our business partners include major facility management outsourcing firms like Sodexo and ABM. IFMA membership represent both fortune 500 as well as mid-size and small businesses, government agencies, and all industry sectors including but not limited to health care, manufacturing, industrial & logistics, airports, utilities, academic institutions, banking, city and country clubs, hospitality, museums, research and development, retail and entertainment facilities.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE
Our scholarship program has awarded more than $1.4 million dollars to more than 527 students since the program started in the early 1990’s. Our IgniteFM! Student Competitions are in their second year and take place at IFMA World Workplace conferences in North America, Europe and Asia. Students are assigned to teams with students from other schools whom they had never met. The competition organizers present a problem statement that entailed a hypothetical situation or problem an Facility Manager faces. Student teams are given just three hours to solve the problem. By the end of the three-hour period, teams submit their presentations to the organizers in Microsoft PowerPoint files. Student teams present their solutions to the judging panel as well as an audience of built environment professionals the next day. Our corporate partner talent acquisition teams are judges and audience members ready to hire the best and the brightest.
The IFMA Foundation is narrowing the employment talent gap through early facility management learning and experiences. Our corporate partners believe in the shared-value investment of a better-prepared future workforce. They understand that the key to unleashing a company’s competitive advantage and increasing corporate growth and potential lies in training today’s youth for tomorrow’s business challenges. The IFMA Foundation works closely with multi-national corporations, national companies and small- to medium- sized businesses to identify, design and implement internship and apprenticeship programs. Our alliances leverage the strengths of the corporate sector on behalf of Facility Management for social Good.
CONNECTING WITH THE COMMUNITY
Working with our global corporate partners and the facility management community, we use our FM Ambassador Kit to reach out to community organizations, educational institutions, STEM/STEAM, veteran organizations, the underemployed and unemployed, guidance counselors, parent/teacher organizations to educate them on exciting and lucrative opportunities in the facility management profession. With over 130 International Facility Management Association (IFMA) chapters, we have a wide reach.
