Chamber Orchestra Performances
Virtuosi bases its success on the knowledge that the greatest motivator and most rewarding experience aspiring young musicians can have is the opportunity to perform for an appreciative audience. The two public concerts Virtuosi of Houston has performed annually at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, Zilkha Hall in collaboration with UniquelyHouston since 2002 provide our students with unique opportunities to perform
for ticketholders in a venue typically experienced only by musicians who have
already completed their university studies and achieved professional
standing. Uniquely Houston partners withperforming arts organizations to provide access to technical, marketing, public relations, and operational expertise in addition to assistance with the overall production quality of each presentation at a discounted rate. Hobby Center manages affordably priced ticket sales with reduced pricing for seniors and students. VoH also distributes discounted or complimentary concert tickets to music educators, potential patrons, and nonprofit organizations to encourage attendance. In March, 2013, VoH orchestra members will share a stand with a Houston Symphony member while rehearsing and playing a great orchestral work for the side-by-side performance at Jones Hall. The final concert of each season is an annual fundraising dinner and performance of an original program at a prestigious Houston hotel attended by over 400. These concerts are the cornerstones of the music education and performing training process that develops emerging young musicians sought after by premier conservatories and music schools. Professionally produced concert CDs and DVDs are important support materials included in college applications.
Small Ensemble Program- Community Engagement
VoH’s Small Ensemble Program prepares students for higher music education curriculum requirements as they rehearse for and perform at venues ranging from cultural festivals and non-profit galas to corporate events, private parties, weddings, and frequent appearances as pre-Houston Symphony concert and intermission entertainment in Jones Hall. Participants gain a sense of teamwork, dependability, and professionalism as they prepare for a growing number of requests for VoH small ensemble performances. VoH is also committed to instilling the value of community service in our students and making chamber music more accessible to individuals with health or mental impairmentsthat otherwise might never experience the pleasure and therapeutic values of live classical music performances.
Small Ensemble Summer Workshop
VoH has offered the Small Ensemble Summer Workshop since 2008. The music instruction and performance based curriculum differs from other workshops in that participants rehearse and perform a larger and more challenging amount of repertoire under the direction of professional musicians and teachers without the travel and lodging expenses of out of state workshops. The Summer Workshop’s featured guest artist and faculty are drawn from the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera, Shepherd School of Music- Rice University, Moores School of Music- University of Houston, and other professional music organizations in and around Houston. Workshop participants benefitfrom the critique of Master Class guest artists who specialize in theirinstrument as they perform for their peers; instrument technique classes;coaching and rehearsals with workshop faculty, and enrichment classes including Solfeggio, Alexander Technique, deportment, and physical training. Students showcase their expanded repertoire and enhanced performance skills in an evening recital attended by over 150 guests the last day of the workshop.
Annnual Immanuel & Helen B. Olshan Concerto Competition
Each February, VoH assembles a panel of five distinguished judges to evaluate student performances in two categories: Strings/Harp and Winds/Percussion/Keyboard. The Concerto Competition is open to all fully enrolled instrumentalists of VoH who meet rehearsal attendance requirements. Judges award $10,500 in scholarships generously donated by The Immanuel Helen B. Olshan Foundation since 1999 to the winning wind and string instrumentalists. The prizes, which range from $2,500 to $500, assist students with their music education expenses for lessons, instruments, and tuition to festivals and summer camps held in conservatory and music schools in America and abroad. The opportunity to compete for sizable monetary awards and the recognition that comes with being a competition prizewinner motivate VoH students to select and rehearse chamber music repertoire different from the pieces played by the full orchestra. The experience gained from playing for a panel of music professionals makes competition participants better prepared for music school admission auditions.
