What we aim to solve
Upholding the dignity and easing the suffering of the terminally ill while supporting their loved ones, and those who are suffering is our mission and the problems our services aim to address. Often referred to locally as the "hospice gold standard," Hinds Hospice is the only hospice of 15 operating in its service area that continuously cares for pediatric patients through our unique Hinds Kids program, allowing families to stay home together while children receive the treatments and care needed. We operate one of two free-standing residential hospice facilities and provide the region’s most comprehensive bereavement programs through our Center for Grief & Healing. Special programs include the extraordinary Angel Babies program for parents experiencing loss of an infant, the unique Circle of Friends children’s grief support program, the We Honor Veterans program caring for veterans at end-of-life, and support for survivors of suicide loss.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Hinds Hospice Home
Nancy Hinds began caring for terminally ill patients experiencing their end-of-life journey in her own home back in 1981. The current Hospice Home, located in Fresno, opened its doors in 1987 and has served over 3,300 patients. On a quiet street surrounded by beautiful gardens, the Hinds Hospice Home is a welcoming environment to receive loving, around-the-clock, end-of-life care. Admission to the Hinds Hospice Home can occur when a patient requires a higher level of care than can be provided in their own home environment.
The home is equipped to care for up to six patients at any one time. Families, friends and pets are encouraged to visit. Children may use the children's playroom and are welcomed to visit their loved one. The chapel is available for private meditation. The Hinds Hospice Home offers patients and their families a peaceful, serene environment. Care is provided by a team of highly skilled hospice care professionals. The goal of the Hospice Care Team is to provide respectful and dignified physical, emotional and spiritual support to all patients and their families.
Outpatient Hospice Services
At Hinds Hospice over 150 patients are seen in their homes or in residential care facilities on any given day between Fresno, Madera, and Merced counties. Our hospice interdisciplinary care teams of nurses, home health aides, medical social workers, chaplains, medical directors, and volunteers will visit a patient where they live, making sure they are as comfortable as possible.
At Hinds Hospice, we continually strive to provide the most complete and compassionate end-of-life care for patients and their families. That is why we have established a very unique Hinds Hospice Interdisciplinary Team to care for all aspects involved with a terminally ill patient. The team is comprised of the following professionals:
Medical Director: Oversees the care of patients, advised the Hospice Team and consults with the patient’s attending physician.
Registered Nurse And LVN Teams: Provides compassionate, skilled care, with the goal of comfort, safety, support and education for the patient and family.
Medical Social Worker: Provides emotional support and counseling to help patients and families cope with end-of-life issues.
Bereavement Counselor: Bereavement (grief and loss) services provided to family members for 13 months after their loss. Additionally, individual counseling and support groups are available.
Chaplain: Is available to assist patients and families with spiritual concerns throughout this journey.
Hospice Aide: Is available to assist with the patient’s personal care
Volunteer: Is available to assist with transportation, errands and visitation.
Center for Grief and Healing
Since its inception, Hinds Hospice has understood the value of providing ongoing support to families after a death. Initially, this grief support was provided primarily to the family members of our Hinds Hospice patients by our bereavement (grief) staff. Over the years, our bereavement program has expanded in response to ongoing requests for specialized support from our community (Fresno, Madera and Merced). The Center for Grief and Healing at Hinds Hospice was developed in 2005 in response to these growing needs. The center affirms our belief and understanding of the importance of support to healing through the grief process.
The mission of the Center for Grief & Healing at Hinds Hospice is to bring understanding, compassion and professional support to those experiencing loss and grief. Our staff is comprised of licensed therapists and counselors who have received extensive training in the area of grief, loss and healing.
Angel Babies ~ Bebitos Angelitos
A terminal diagnosis or the death of a baby is one of the most devastating experiences a family can go through. But you don't have to go through it alone. Angel Babies/Bebitos Angelitos is here to provide the special kind of support you and your family need. Angel Babies offers a perinatal hospice program designed for families whose unborn child has been diagnosed with a terminal condition, offering support during pregnancy and providing ideas for creating loving memories. Hospice services are available for babies who survive after birth and are in need of special care. This care can be provided in the baby's home or in the Hinds Hospice Home. This program assists families to both welcome and enjoy their baby and, when necessary, to say goodbye. Services are also available for families who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth or other infant death.
People are not taught how to deal with the death of a baby. Our friends and family often don't know what to say. Most people expect the parents, especially the father, to return to work within a few days after the loss and be "back to normal" within a matter of months. But the death of a baby changes parents forever, and results in a uniquely deep and personal grieving process. The Angel Babies/Bebitos Angelitos bereavement service provides families with helpful information and support during their journey of grief and mourning.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
At Hinds Hospice, our goal is to accomplish our mission to uphold the dignity and ease the suffering of the terminally ill while supporting their loved ones, and those who are grieving. We strive to provide the highest quality hospice care and grief support to those who need it and educate our community about the benefits of hospice care.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
To accomplish our mission, we have created multiple programs in response to the needs of our community. Programs include:
Hinds Hospice Home - The only inpatient hospice home between the Los Angeles area and Modesto, the Hinds Hospice Home was the first of its kind. Patients are cared for in a home environment and receive around-the-clock care.
Outpatient Services - Patients receive hospice care where they live and are most comfortable.
Center for Grief and Healing - Serving our hospice families as well as members of the community-at-large, the Center for Grief and Healing provides grief support for at least 13 months following the loss of a loved one with supportive phone calls, mailings and counseling opportunities in both a group and individual setting.
Angel Babies/Bebitos Angelitos - Our perinatal hospice program help families who have had a pregnancy loss or lost a child in infancy. This is the most comprehensive program of its kind in the Western U.S. Staff make hospital visits, conduct counseling sessions both individually and in a group setting, memory making activities, phone calls, etc.
We Honor Veterans - Through a partnership with NHPCO, our We Honor Veterans program has provided special training to our staff and volunteers to help veteran patients at the end of their lives.
Pediatric Hospice & Palliative Care Program - We are the only hospice in the area to offer hospice and palliative care to pediatric patients.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are able to implement these strategies through a comprehensive team approach. The hospice team consists of:
Hospice Aide: Is available to assist with the patient’s personal care.
Volunteer: Is available to assist with transportation, errands and visitation.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We live out our mission each day and have a lot to show for it. We are accredited by the Joint Commission, earned 4-Star status with our We Honor Veterans program, and our Angel Babies program has been a model for other perinatal hospices both nationally and internationally. We also serve patients regardless of their ability to pay and serve the extreme boundaries of our territory, seeing patients other hospices won't because of location.
As more of our community ages, the need for quality hospice care continues to grow. Hinds Hospice is meeting this need by increasing our clinical capacity to serve more than 350 patients daily. In 2019 we completed work on our state of the art simulation education lab which provides scenario-based training, preparing clinicians to handle situations that arise in a home-based care model that may be unusual or unexpected and provide a consistent level of excellent care.
Our Center for Grief and Healing serves hospice families and our entire community providing individual counseling and group grief support. We recently developed an online video of our Understanding Grief Workshop and have made it available on YouTube. We are currently developing the same video in Spanish and Hmong.
Our Survivors of Suicide Loss program expanded services to include providing immediate response to suicides through a partnership with the County of Fresno. Our Local Outreach for Suicide Survivors (LOSS) Team consists of trained volunteers and clinicians who respond to suicides and provide support and resources to families and friends.
While we've accomplished quite a bit, there is still more work to do. We would like to expand our services in Merced County to serve more patients and their families and do more multicultural outreach within our service area.
