Youth and Children Education

Guru Nanak Khalsa School is a program for the children at Sikh Gurdwara, San Jose CA. The mission is to give to students knowledge and appreciation of the Sikh way of life and their rich Sikh heritage.

Young sikh children attending the school are instilled with love for Sikh religion, its beliefs, values and customs. This is accomplishes through the teaching of the punjabi language and Gurmukhi script so that they are able to read and understand the Sikh scriptures and Sri Guru Granth Sahib. In addition to this they also learn about the Sikh history and Keertan, the Sikh devotional music.

Population(s) Served

The first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak created Langar for several reasons, the primary ones being because he wanted equality for all and a removal of caste barriers among the people. For this reason, a community kitchen exists for all devotees and visitors to eat together.
The Sikh Gurdwara San Jose operates one of the largest Sikh community kitchen programs in the United States. Langar (community meal) is prepared for about 1,000 people on weekdays and over 7,500 people on weekends. On Diwali (Festival of Lights) and New Year’s Eve / Day, Langar is prepared for over 15,000 people.
