Helping Silicon Valley Care
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is home to San Jose, California's only top level trauma center and offers world-class specialty and primary care services that make the long-delayed dream of health care equity a possibility. Only the institutions in charge of providing clean drinking water do more to protect the health of residents of Silicon Valley. As a safety net facility, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Hospitals and Clinics (SCVMC) remains committed to serving everyone regardless of ability to pay, so it relies deeply on community support to thrive. Cities and counties across this country have seen their safety net health systems wither and shutter from neglect and forces beyond their control. The result often has life and death consequences for vulnerable populations: children, the elderly, the disabled and those with chronic illnesses. The Valley Medical Center Foundation is the main fundraising arm for SCVMC and supports vital services and programs to county residents.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Programmatic Fund Administration
The primary programmatic activity provided by the VMC Foundation is the administration of over 100 restricted funds that support Santa Clara Valley Medical Center’s (SCVMC) departments, staff, capital projects, and health programs that benefit SCVMC’s patient population. The VMC Foundation does not provide direct services to the community.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
At the VMC Foundation, we believe that partnering with the community is the best way to keep our safety net strong. At the VMC Foundation, donors find that their dollars can go further and have more impact on the communities and causes they care about most. Philanthropy drives innovation and efficiency at SCVMC. We're helping the safety net become self-sustaining. Our vision is that one day, with the help of the VMC Foundation, Santa Clara County's public healthcare system will be fully resourced such that everyone in our community has access to comprehensive, high-quality healthcare, regardless of background or ability to pay.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Funds raised and managed by the VMC Foundation provide crucial support to health programs benefiting patients of all ages, from premature newborns to homebound seniors. Programs target high-need, at-risk populations including victims of sex trafficking, former gang members, and individuals experiencing homelessness. Funds are also used for educational purposes and to purchase needed technology and equipment for SCVMC.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The VMC Foundation has a 30 year history of working in partnership with SCVMC staff to address the most pressing health needs of the community in which we serve. The Board of Directors represents a diverse cross-section in Santa Clara County, with expertise in medicine, public health, law, finance, local government and more. The staff is highly trained and motivated, with an average term of service of 7.5 years, allowing for strong and deep relationships with their counterparts on the patient care side at SCVMC. The Foundation maintains expertise in a variety of fundraising methods, and has well-developed financial policies and internal controls to ensure smooth and consistent operations. In short, the VMC Foundation has great clarity of mission, a team that understands the scope and standards of the work, and a system to maintain high standards of excellence and fidelity to donor and SCVMC priorities. As well, the VMC Foundation is guided by the nonprofit Standards for Excellence certification which outlines rigorous protocols for transparency in organizational operations.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The VMC Foundation has raised over $85 million in support of the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Hospital & Clinics since its founding. Funds have supported large-scale capital improvements, program development and ongoing efforts to improve access to and quality of care. Notable fundraising accomplishments include:
1. Establishing the Sobrato Cancer Center with purchase of a new Linear Accelerator.
2. Creation of the Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic.
3. Development of Reach Out and Read, Patient Wireless Internet, SCVMC Farmers Market, Turning Wheels for Kids, Pediatric Healthy Lifestyle Center and other initiatives that directly improve care and patient experience.
4. The launch of a major capital campaign to create San Jose's first Women and Children's Center.
5. During the COVID-19 pandemic, operating as Santa Clara County's central clearing house for inkind and cash donations towards relief efforts. Over 15 million items of protective gear were donated by the community and millions of dollars contributed, allowing the VMC Foundation to purchase medical equipment and technology for rapid testing, telehealth, and vaccinations to return the community to greater safety.
