What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Capital and Program Support for Mercy and Mercy Southwest Hospitals
The primary purpose of the Friends of Mercy Foundation is to develop fundraising strategies that support program and technology needs of the hospital. We raise money through annual support, major gifts, capital campaigns, special events, public and private grants, and deferred giving. Specific goals and budgets are in place for each. Annual Support includes raising money through six formal annual giving programs: The William Howell Century Club and Catherine McAuley Society (donors give $1,000 annually); The Legacy Circle at Mercy (targeted to young leaders in the community, donors give $500 annually), a direct mail program focused on identifying grateful patients, an annual Christmas and Easter appeal and an annual employee giving program. Our annual golf tournament raises money for technology needs. Millions have been raised in grants that support our outreach efforts beyond the walls of the hospital (preventive healthcare for uninsured, senior services, food and clothing for the poor, etc.) Major Gifts and Campaigns focus on current technology and/or expansion needs.
Chronic Disease Self-Management Programs
Chronic Disease Self-Management Programs
The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP), established by the Stanford School of Medicine, is a comprehensive program designed to provide patients who have a chronic disease with the knowledge, tools and motivation needed to become proactive in their health. Each seminar consists of 6 weekly classes covering a variety of topics including nutrition, exercise, use of medications, communication and evaluating new treatments. Conditions focused on are diabetes, asthma, heart disease and stroke. Home visits are done to address individuals with specific needs and ensure they are getting what they need. A resource center consisting of a patient hotline, weekly staff phone calls, books, and magazines will help keep patients “in the loop” and feel connected and supported during the session. Through the EMPOWERMENT Program and system of support, we will change the way patients manage themselves and restore their sense of control in their life.
Health Screening Clinics - Community Wellness Program
Our Community Health Screening Clinics provide monthly comprehensive health screenings at various locations throughout Kern County. The program targets low-income families and/or individuals who do not have access to health care. Screenings are provided at no cost to participants. Bilingual health educators are on site for each clinic. Currently, Community Health Screening Clinics are held in Lake Isabella, Arvin, Lamont, Taft (3 sites), Greenfield, the Mercy/Memorial Outreach Center (Southeast Bakersfield), the Mercy/Memorial Learning Center (East Bakersfield), East Bakersfield Senior Center, East Hills Mall, Cameillia Apartment Complex (East Bakersfield) and Shafter. Our screenings provide participants with measurements of the blood glucose level, cholesterol, blood pressure, and body composition, along with individual health education services. All participants receive access to case management services for continued health monitoring and/or referrals to other programs and assistance.
Emergency Food Basket Expansion
