What we aim to solve
Stewards Inc’s payee program exists to provide support for adults with mental disabilities, who are among the most vulnerable individuals in Kern County. The majority of them suffer from at least one mental disability, and many have co-occurring disorders. These individuals have been deemed incapable of managing their finances by Social Security and they come to us as a last resort because they do not have a family member or trusted friend to help them with financial management. Like all other nonprofits, the services that Stewards Inc. offers do not lend themselves to profit, because it is not a typical market with a consumer who can afford to pay for the services.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Representative Payee Program
As a Social Security appointed representative payee, it is our responsibility to manage the Social Security benefits of over 1,000 individuals throughout Kern County. We work with our clients to determine and use their benefits for their current living needs and those of the foreseeable future. We budget to pay for housing, utilities, food, clothing, and extra funds are used for personal and emergency funds.
Sister Josie's Food Pantry
Sister Josie’s food pantry provides food to households experiencing food insecurity. This program supplies critical nutrition to individuals and families throughout Kern County.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our mission and vision is to prevent homelessness in our community. All of our services steward clients in the stewardship of their lives. We are dedicated to helping keep our clients safe, healthy, and financially stable. We help them take care of themselves and we act on their behalf when needed.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
As a Social Security appointed representative payee, it is our responsibility to manage our client’s benefits. Steward's Inc. will work with our client to determine and use their benefits for their current living needs and those of the foreseeable future. We budget to pay for housing, utilities, food, clothing, and extra funds are used for personal and emergency funds. We work in and partner with other organizations in our community to keep it clean, safe, and provide educational opportunities. We believe communities work best when there’s committed effort to value where you live and to care for the lives of people. It is a group effort and we are in it for the long haul.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Steward's Inc. has a methodical, dedicated and experienced staff focused on delivering representative payee services to our clients. To efficiently run our services, we use the Representative Payee Manager (RPM) software to best address our clients needs. RPM allows us to document our client's case files, organize our client's financial data, create balances and budgets, and it helps keep our data safe with its built-in security system. We are faithful to manage our resources in a manner that brings maximum benefit to our clients. We speak and act honestly. We are open and factual in our dealings with our donor, government programs, and our clients. And we assist our clients in stewarding their resources so they can be as healthy, happy, and safe as possible.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Currently, we have roughly 1,300 clients. Through the management of their finances we are quite effective in steering them away from very dangerous and severe outcomes, such as slipping into homelessness or blowing all of their money at the beginning of the month. The whole community benefits from this because the roughly $1.2 million in disability benefits we manage per month is used on rent, food, payment of their utilities, and other basic necessities. We are seeking to expand our services to include: a weekly food pantry and an affordable housing program accessible to our clientele base.
