What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Business technical assistance services offered by our Women's Business Center (WBC) are as valuable and needed today as they have ever been. Viable employment, under-employment, and working below a living wage are all needs addressed through our services. These services are designed to improve the economic prosperity of the low-to-moderate income (LMI) target populations especially women, minorities, and veterans. We also inclusively serve displaced workers, homemakers, single parents, people with disabilities, and existing small business owners. It is through our services that small business development, especially new business openings, and expansion, as well as job creation and retention are attained. In addition to working with new entrepreneurs, we are dedicated to bringing existing businesses into legal compliance and planned growth, so they can effectively contribute to the long-term economic well-being of their community.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Women's Business Partners

The Women's Business Partners' (WBP) program provides training, technical assistance, loans and support. WBP is Central CA's ONLY SBA funded Women's Business Center; called Women's Business Partners (WBP), currently serving a three county region throughout Monterey, Kern and San Luis Obispo Counties. MCSC technical assistance programs can be summarized in four categories; 1) Technical Assistance/Individual Counseling/Coaching, 2) Education and Training, 3) Loan Products, and 4) Support Services. Regularly scheduled events include biannual Women's Business Partner Roundtables, Friday Brown Bag Dialogue events, weekly open Business Plan Tutor Sessions; periodic Loan Proposal Preparation, Marketing, Finance and Supplier Opportunity Workshops. Education through multi session courses is also provided several times throughout the year using the curriculum of Vision to Venture (a 14-week curriculum written by women especially for women and published by Women's Economic Ventures) and the Kaufman Foundation FastTrac curriculums; New Venture and Growth Venture. Programs are offered in both English and Spanish throughout the three county Central CA service region.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Special characteristics of our demographic are highlighted in our mission statement: underserved, low-income men, women and minorities. MCSC serves people of all ages, genders and socio-economic status. Our organization’s clients are those who cannot afford private consulting, and many have not attended college. MCSC is their best opportunity for education that can propel them out of the low-income cycle and teach them the necessary business skills that will assist them in earning a sustainable living wage through self-employment.
We have found that training and consulting work together critically to create, and sustain small businesses, which in turn will build their capacity to create and retain jobs. In fact, a recent CAMEO study showed that new small businesses receiving consulting have an 80% better chance of being in business after three years than businesses launched without the benefit of consulting. The MCSC Women’s Business Center focuses on the LMI population and provides this consulting. It is this population that seeks help from our programs, as they cannot afford expensive private consultants to help their business grow and succeed.

Mission Community Services Corporation Women's Business Center is working with community partners to offer classes and workshops in Kern County. MCSC helps individuals create wealth for themselves and create jobs for others. In turn, this helps to ween individuals and families off public assistance, stabilizing and revitalizing the local workforce and communities.

Our services are offered independently, however, they are more effectively utilized in conjunction. Business consulting is a supportive service that enhances the foundation knowledge and skill set taught in our training course. And our educational workshops are designed to keep individuals abreast of the ever-changing business conditions. Together these services enable the creation, sustainability, and expansion of small businesses.

We have opened a WBC in Kern County to meet the needs of the community. We have a team of business instructors and expert consultants that are ready to assist our clients. We have community resources that we will be collaborating with to ensure our clients have adequate facilities and a positive learning environment.

We have established the new WBC, and we are currently offering classes and workshops. We are also consulting new business owners, and building community partnerships.

Next, we would like to grow our services to rural communities in Kern County; offering English and Spanish classes.
