What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Writers in Residence
Since 1988 the Writers in Residence Program has been Hedgebrook’s core program, supporting fully-funded, 2 - 4 week residencies for approximately 80 writers each year. Selections are made through a rigorous, competitive and completely anonymous review process involving teams of writers, educators, agents, literary managers and editors—based on the quality of writing, strength of proposal and authenticity of voice. Up to seven writers are in residence at a time, each housed in a handcrafted cottage. They spend their days in solitude—writing, reading, wandering the land. In the evenings, they gather to share a home-cooked meal, their work, their process and their stories.
Hedgebrook Songwriters Residency
Songwriters come to Hedgebrook for unprecedented time to be in residence, unplug from life on the road and in the studio, and to focus on writing new music. Here they immerse themselves in their creative process, fueled by organic meals prepared by Hedgebrook’s chefs shared each evening at the Farmhouse table, and time in their own cottage in the woods. They bring their guitars, ukuleles, harps, keyboards and fill the cottages with music. They also have access to a nearby Sound Trap Studio on Whidbey where can go for spontaneous jam sessions.
Women Playwrights Festival
Since 1998, the Hedgebrook Women Playwrights Festival has proudly supported the creation and development of hundreds of new theatrical works by some of the most exciting playwrights of our time—who have gone on to become Pulitzer Prize, Tony, Obie, Emmy and Golden Globe award winners, as well as McArthur Genius Fellows. Working in partnership with major regional theaters, Hedgebrook selects playwrights from a group of highly accomplished writers nominated by a national committee, presents public readings of the playwrights’ latest work, and then invites the writers to a residency at Hedgebrook for further work on their new plays.
Radical Class Retreat Series
Radical Craft Retreat Classes combine Hedgebrook’s retreat experience with the unique opportunity to be in residence and study with a celebrated teacher on beautiful Whidbey Island or other exceptional locations, including India and Italy. Creative writing workshops in a diversity of formats and genres are offered to women writers at all levels of experience. Participation in each class is limited to 6-8 writers, to ensure individual attention, and create an intimate, supportive writing community.
VORTEXT
VORTEXT is a weekend salon at Whidbey Institute, led by renowned women writers and available to 60 self-identified writers. The program gives writers the opportunity to connect in diverse and powerful small-group workshops and to enjoy dynamic keynotes and discussions about opportunities and challenges for women who write. Over the course of the weekend, attendees may participate in open mics as well.
Y-WE Write Summer Camp
Hedgebrook partners with Young Women Empowered (Y-WE ) to launch an annual, summer writing camp, providing programs for 30-50 local girls (teens) from diverse backgrounds. Hedgebrook selects four experienced alumnae to work closely with Y-WE youth and mentors over the course of a one-week camp. The writers each present on a different area of literary expression—including poetry, fiction, playwriting, lyrics, spoken word, autobiography, and more!
Documentary Story Lab
Doc lab is a 10-day residency for five female documentary filmmakers to be in residence and work with three seasoned Lab Leaders from the filmmaking industry chosen by Hedgebrook, to develop their projects in the rough cut stage. The Lab includes group and one-on-one sessions with Lab Leaders. Participants are nominated from organizations that support women filmmakers, and from that pool of nominees Hedgebrook works with Lab Leaders to choose the five participants.

Equity strategies
Last updated: 09/16/2021GuideStar partnered with Equity in the Center - an organization that works to shift mindsets, practices, and systems to increase racial equity - to create this section. Learn more
- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
