"Catch Every Child"
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
In the United States, there is currently a gap between the academic performance of African American and Latino students as compared to their White peers. The gap is between 20-30 points depending upon the grade measured according to the U.S. Department of Education. Envision Children is working to close that gap through the operation of our Catch Every Child (CEC) initiative.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Catch Every Child
1. Within three academic years, students in CEC will achieve proficiency at grade level in reading and math as measured by the Measures of Academic Performance (MAP) Test.
2. Within three academic years, students in the CEC will achieve proficiency on standardized tests used in the classroom to track academic performance.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Small group and private instruction in the areas of reading and math through the operation of our core programs including:
1. Extended Day Program
2. Kindergarten Challenge
3. In Class Instruction
4. Academic Summer Enrichment Program
5. Pump Up the STEM
6. Private Tutoring (1:1 Instruction)
7. Power Saturday: Reading
8. Families for Educational Excellence
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are in Year 5 (2021-2022) of our Catch Every Child initiative. We are partnering with the Northwest Local School District located in Colerain Twp., Ohio on this initiative.
In 2021 we worked with 831 students in Kindergarten through fifth grade who were in need of remedial help in reading and math. They had not tested as proficient on the Ohio MAP Test administered to all students at the start and end of each school year.
We are working with 91 of these students in the Extended Day Program, Kindergarten Challenge and In Class Instruction program. We serve another 325 in the summer through our Academic Summer Enrichment Program.
We also served over 400 students in our private tutoring program in partnership with the Cincinnati Recreation Commission.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
November 2021
We did a proof-of-concept testing of the Catch Every Child initiative in 2017-2020. Through three years of working with 638 students we were able to help the students to achieve proficiency in reading 73% of the time and match 69% of the time.
We continued to work with the students who were non-proficient in 2020-2021, but have incomplete data due to the worldwide Coronavirus pandemic.
We began the 2021 academic year in a new school district and are forming a new cohort.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
