What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Global Health Corps Fellowship

Global Health Corps is mobilizing a diverse and multi-disciplinary talent pipeline of emerging African leaders and training them to collectively transform health systems so that they work for all. GHC’s flagship program is a highly competitive paid 13-month leadership development fellowship in which rising leaders fill critical non-clinical capacity gaps at nonprofits and government ministries in Uganda, Rwanda, Malawi, and Zambia. Alongside their daily work to strengthen health systems, GHC provides structured leadership development training through a robust curriculum that cultivates systems and design thinking, personal resilience, and networked leadership. Our model, recognized with a Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship and awards from Echoing Green and Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation, is innovative in this combination of experiential learning with a robust leadership curriculum, as well as our highly collaborative global community and ongoing investment in our alumni.

Population(s) Served

GHC’s investment in our leaders is far from over at the end of the 13-month intensive program. We invest in their career journeys through tailored advocacy and management training, opportunities for collective action, seed funding for social entrepreneurs, mentorship and peer-coaching, and more. In addition to GHC-designed programming, we are proud to collaborate with high-caliber institutions like Rootwise Leadership, McKinsey Academy, Africa Management Institute, The Boardroom Africa, Advocacy Accelerator, and the Op-Ed Project to deliver our leadership training and provide ongoing investment in the career trajectories of our community of leaders. As our rising leaders develop their areas of expertise, gain influence, and mobilize others outside the GHC community, their impact generates a ripple effect that is already shifting the status quo in the field.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
