Comprehensive Gulf Coast Recovery Plan
Alliance Institute is a convener of organizations across the region working of GCCW. The Gulf Coast Civic Works Act has been reworked to address the BP oil drilling disaster as well as the 2005 hurricane season. The current version is "One Gulf, Resilient Gulf"(http://www.oxfamamerica.org/files/one-gulf-resilient-gulf.pdf) and has been endorsed by over 100 organizations across the Gulf Coast region and the nation. Addressed to Naval Secretary Ray Mabus, the man currently in charge of Gulf Coast recovery for the President, the proposal calls for:
The development of new livelihood opportunities through long-term federal investments in ecosystem restoration, climate adaptation and clean, renewable energy to build more resilient coastal communities;
Ensuring that new jobs are decent jobs, avoiding “low-road” contracting practices and promoting sustainable jobs and working conditions;
Supporting community-based scalable transitional workforce and enterprise development programs with successful track records;
Ensuring any governance structure builds upon past planning and prioritizes community participation, accountability, transparency and streamlining of project implementation; and
Adequate funding is provided through proposals including eliminating tax loop holes, and tax deductions for oil spillers and directing these revenues along with federal fines and liabilities related to the BP Horizon Disaster towards a Gulf Coast Community Resiliency Fund.
Response to BP Oil Drilling Disaster
In response to a lack of access to health care, Alliance Institute is working with Louisiana Bayoukeepers, Louisiana Public Health Institute, and Jefferson Health Care Clinics to arrange for volunteer doctors from across the state of Louisiana to provide services to the residents of Barataria, Crown Point, and Lafitte. The health clinic, to be located in Lafitte, LA, will provide access to public health care for residents without insurance. Services will include medical, dental, and mental health care. The clinic will also monitor workers of the drilling disaster for health affects due to toxic exposure. Alliance Institute's partnership will provide independent health care that is focused on treating people and not maintaining a corporate image.
Bounce Nation Youth Engagement
Working with the New Orleans Bounce culture, the Alliance Institute’s BOUNCE NATION project will utilize indigenous aspects of the culture, such as concerts and theatrical presentations, as entry points toward introducing New Orleans youth to civic engagement as a way of establishing a voice for themselves and creating influence over the future of New Orleans. Bounce Nation program is to provide culture-involved youth, ages 16 to 30 with experiences alternative to those that result in violent crime. Topics that have been identified by New Orleans youth include domestic abuse, education, homophobia, and violent crime.
