Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Death from diarrheal disease is entirely preventable. Agua Pura's goal is to reduce to zero the incidence of childhood and family diarrhea in the communities where we work. Our work is focused primarily in Latin America and the Caribbean but offer consultation and support worldwide. We are always invited by local organizations to come and provide our services at no cost to help prevent and eliminate this disease.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Agua Pura works through local organizations with ties to the families and communities. We train these local organizations and community leaders in our modern methods of water testing and water purification and sanitation. These men and women then become local experts and sources of information and support to their communities. We provide them with teaching materials and supplies and work with them as they educate and demonstrate to their neighbors what they have learned. They provide a positive example to others in keeping their own families safe and healthy.
We have provided low-cost Water Pasteurization Indicators to thousands of families as a way to reach and protect many more families than traditional large-scale projects.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Agua Pura has worked for over 10 years throughout Latin America and the Caribbean providing these services. Because of our reputation and expertise, we are always invited to come and offer assistance to local organizations. Our staff has a strong background in the sciences we advocate and understands the technical details of our work. We have developed effective training materials and supplies which we freely share.
Our staff are all volunteers and our methods are inexpensive to implement, so our program costs are very low and we are able to serve many more people.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Agua Pura Para El Pueblo started in Mexico over 10 years ago helping a local non-profit to build safe latrines for families that lived and worked on a garbage dump. Many of those latrines are still in use. Over the years since we have worked with a number of organizations throughout Latin America. We have tested the drinking water of over a thousand families in dozens of communities. Agua Pura has provided water testing training and materials to many local non-profits who now continue our work. Our work is inexpensive and effective, and families and other non-profits are very supportive of us.
Agua Pura is developing programs to allow local communities and organizations to make their own water purification materials themselves. We now have a community run production facility to make Water Pasteurization Indicators in Honduras and are planning for others in Mexico and possibly Haiti. This should further lower the cost of these materials and make them available to even more people. The goal of the organization we work with in Honduras is to distribute on of these indicators to every family in the region with a child under 5 years of age.
We are proud of the successes we have had and look forward to challenges ahead.
Agua Pura is involved in research to develop other water purification methods and devices, especially ones that can be used in emergencies or that can be used on a large scale.
